Amazon Joining Internet Satellite Race, Orbit To Be Crowded?
It seems like the space race has officially begun, and this time it is not limited to just one heavenly body but many different ones as well covering many different aspects human endeavour.
Not only are many agencies and countries eyeing to establish a permanent base on the Moon and Mars, there are also tons of plans to utilise the orbit around our planet for various purposes.
There are plans for new space stations, space hotels, constellations of internet satellites and much more. It seems like space is going to be a busy place after all with a plethora of human activities.
Just recently, SpaceX launched the first batch of its Starlink constellation satellites and it seems like other tech giants are eager to join as well. Amazon, the world's largest retailer is planning to launch its own internet satellites as well.
A Crowded Party?
SpaceX's Starlink project will ultimate have 12,000 satellites orbiting the planet and where money is involved, there is bound to be competition. It seems like the first ones to compete against Elon and company is going to be none other than Amazon.
Recently, it has filed an application with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to launch around 3,200 internet satellites. As like SpaceX, their plan is to connect the millions of people of the planet that still do not have an internet connection.
That sounds good as more connectivity will only make the world smaller and bring the people closer and provide opportunities to those that need it. But a major concern is now looming at the doorstep.
With SpaceX and Amazon, and possibly more companies in the future launching thousands of internet satellites, the orbit around the Earth could get very crowded. So much so that launching rockets or future space missions and even space tourism could be hampered by it.
Also, there is already a huge problem of space debris that we haven't figured out how to solve and the internet satellites could add to it further. We are at the beginning of our space endeavours and every step that we take from here on has to be well though out thinking decades in advance.
