Removing the Annoying Red LED Lights from Sound Blaster Z

Since I needed a sound card with support for Dolby Digital Live encoding for use with digital optical SPDIF connection with the speakers I recently got a Sound Blaster Z. Not a lot of other cheaper options available with DDL encoder, so I still had to go for a gaming sound card that was not really needed in this case. Changing motherboards from a one that had DDL encoding support to a new one that does not created the need to figure out something and getting an external sound card is usually the best solution...

The Sound Blaster Z sound card does have one tiny little bit of a problem that can be really annoying and that is the red light that the card emits when it is on, it is a styling solution from Creative. Not having a software option to turn off the LED lights however can be a problem or at least it can be quite annoying for some users like me.

There are two bright RED LEDs on the PCB of the Sound Blaster Z sound card that are the cause of the bright red light coming from the device. What some users do to solve the light issue is put some black tape on the two red LEDs inside the sound card in order to get rid of the issue and that can be a temporary fix of some kind.

I however prefer a more permanent and direct solution to the problem, so I have instead desoldered the two annoying red LED lights from the board of the sound card and no more light. Do note that desoldering the LEDs will void your warranty, so if you are worried about that, then you can just tape them and remove the tape if you need later on.

The Sound Blaster Z of course continues to function just fine as there is only power going to the two LEDs on the board, so removing them does not affect the normal operation of the sound card in any way. Desoldering the original LEDs you can also solder a different color ones or ones that are not so bright etc., but for me no lights is what was needed.
