Wie viele große Künstler begann Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) sein musikalisches Schaffen sehr früh – bereits im Alter von sieben Jahren sang er in einem Gospelchor. Gitarre und Songwriting brachte er sich selbst bei. Bald trat er der Band "The Alfatones" bei. Ab 1956 war Mayfield Teil von "The Roosters". Wem das nichts sagt der sollte bei den "Impressions" aufhorchen. Mit "For Your Precious Love" landeten sie nach einer Namensänderung im Jahr 1958 den ersten Hit. Jetzt spielt, singt und schreibt Mayfield eigene Lieder, wechselt später die Formationen in Chicago und New York.

Mayfield arbeitete weiter als Solokünstler und mit großen Soullegenden zusammen. Darunter Aretha Franklin und The Staple Singers. Mit seinem Album Superfly veröffentlichte er 1972 einen der einflussreichsten Blaxploitation-Soundtracks.

Wo Soul und Funk ohne die Wirkung von "Super Fly" heute stünden, ist schwer vorzustellen.
Curtis Mayfield war Teil der ersten Generation afroamerikanischer Künstler im Bereich Funk und Soul, die sich nicht scheuten, mit kritischen Texten und handfesten Aussagen soziale wie politische Missstände anzuprangern.

Like many great artists, Curtis Mayfield (1942-1999) began his musical work very early - at the age of seven he sang in a gospel choir. He taught himself guitar and songwriting. Soon he joined the band "The Alfatones". From 1956 Mayfield was part of "The Roosters". Those who don't know that should pay attention to the "Impression".
