Rosé has been around since before the Roman Empire in 125 B.C., but now it’s making a huge comeback, with 53% sales growth from 2016 to 2017. Only a small number of wine varieties are a rosé, but 1 out of every 36 bottles of wine sold in the United States is a rosé. Sparkling rosé is growing at twice the rate of other sparkling wines.
The reason for this comeback might be a increase in promotional tours, magazine articles, and musician endorsements, or simply a change in consumers. Women ages 21-34 make of 40% of those who drink rosé, but it's not just female millennials who favor the drink. Millennial men proudly sipping pink wines as part of a growing “Brosé” trend.
The wine itself has changed in recent years as well. Once limited to super sweet varieties, rosés are now available in wide range from sweet to dry. This growing range of rosé wines make for easy foods pairings, with options to complement your dish whether light or spicy. Today, 53% of American find a glass of rosé more refreshing than popsicle on hot summer day and many drink it to celebrate special occasions.
Most Americans don’t confine rosé to special days, with 60% choosing the drink consistently throughout the year and nearly 1/4 preferring it during warmer months. Adults enjoy their rosé with everyday activities from reading a book to sunbathing or watching a sporting event.
