Fughetta in D Minor op 37 no 6 – Gustav Merkel
Gustav Merkel (1827 – 1885) was a Lutheran who held the position as organist at the Catholic Cathedral in Dresden.
Apart from 9 sonatas for organ, the first of these for two organists, he wrote a sets of smaller organ works, including a number of fugues. He also wrote an organ method op 177 which was published in 1884. In style, one can detect the influence of Mendelssohn. The Fughetta I have chosen is based on a chromatic motif.
The instrument upon which I am playing is a 1929 American organ by Möller. In order to make the contrapuntal lines clear, I registered very simply using the 8 and 4 principal registers coupled to the Pedal 16 flue.
