How to write a rap song
Although every artist can come up with a totally different result for the same assignment, it's useful to have a basis if you struggle with writing your music. Follow these instructions to write a rap.
Writing a Rap Song Step 1
Brainstorm. Allow yourself to first release all your associations (or even a rap improvisation) to stimulate your creativity. Then make a list of each idea, unique perspective or possible lyrics that come into your mind. Let this lead and inspire you as you continue to elaborate on your text.
Let your ideas sink in for a while. Keep a notepad handy so you can take some inspiration while you are in the bus, the gym, the supermarket, etc. This way you can hold the moments and hopefully expand.
Step 2
Write the chorus. When you write an essay, you start with an essay. But this is a rap, so start with the recurring pieces. The chorus contains not only the subject of your song, but must also be catchy and unique. A great chorus often gives inspiration to other elements of the song, such as the beat or other texts, so do not be content with something that does not raise new ideas.
If you do not just come up with an idea, look for a line of rap that you like. Do not copy this literally, because it is not allowed by law, but do it yourself.
if you are having trouble with your vocabulairy i suggest using the site http://www.rhymezone.com , it is usefull for finding al kinds of rhymes and even similar sounding words that arent rhymes. It even gives you the definition of the words you want to use if you click on them.
Step 3
Go play with words. Choose points from the list that came through brainstorming to get your inspiration and work out these points. This is the time when your skills will be written as textwriter and poet. If you are an experienced rapper, you must use your strengths. If you know you're good at metaphors, use that to your advantage. If you're a good narrator, make a story of your rap.
Dont get in your own way. The biggest mistake in writing your texts is that you want to say something, and that you try to process abstract concepts in your texts. Use concrete words, sentences and images to keep your idea in the background.
Step 4
Be credible. You should not write a rap about the global drug network you are leading, while you are actually a teenager who lives in the rich part of town. Also keep in mind that you do not have to use the same topics as famous artists. For example, the Beastie Boys cast out in a unique and creative way about parties and skateboarding, and that did not really fit in the rap culture.
If you want to write a rap about something that you do not do yourself, make it as ridiculous as possible. Exaggerate it to the max. Just dont do it too often.
Step 5
Check and improve. The first version of your rap will probably not be the best. It does not matter. The first version of "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan was a 20 page long drama. As you write, just note everything that's coming up, but after that you have to delete to keep a workable and efficient piece of text.
Delete anything that does not fit the theme, doesnt get the right tone or isnt true to your story and save only the best sentences and images. If you find it difficult to determine what works well and what doesnt, try rewriting the song completely without looking at your paper. That works like a kind of sieve - the better finds will be earlier in your memory.
The average rap song has 2-3 verses of 16-20 lines each, and 3-4 times the chorus. Try to cast your text in this form.
Step 6
Once you have a good basis for song i suggest you start looking for beats to rehurse your song to. I have made a playlist of instrumental beats on my youtube account you can use for starters :
