Smedley the Chummy: A 1930 Austin 7 Restoration #2

in #socalsteemit6 years ago (edited)

This is Smedley.

He is a 1930 Austin 7, acquired in Adelaide, South Australia in the mid 1990's, and shipped to San Diego California.

You can check out Part 1 right here

In this episode of Smedley, takedown of a trusty and running, but "getting threadbare" restoration done in the 1980s.

First off, disassemble.

Ignore the little orange Graham Dodge, We are looking at the raw power and engineering of Austin!

Flat head motors are easy to work on when not using three different Whitworth hardware types. Note the "Stinger", hand crank system. sticking out from under the fan

Not too crusty, Ended up doing the rings and bearings, and re-grinding the valves. The engine is a 747cc inline 4 stroke 4-banger that runs two cylinders each at 180 degrees. It has a split crank and originally had a down draft carburetor  that is being replaced with a Villiers side draft unit from a later model Austin. The crankcase is aluminum, the block and head are iron. The exhaust manifold is brass and was badly cracked.

Isn't it just the cutest thing ever?

So, There you go, It's all in pieces, scattered about the shop.

The next installment will be about work and reassembly.

Haha..."Isn't it just the cutest thing ever?" Yes, yes it is. No idea what it is, but Smedley has a great ring to it. Very nice to see the work in progress. I admire your skills @dawg-boy :)

Thanks!
Stay tuned for part 3!

Oldtimer and restoration - now not to upvote :)

I see you used stem tag, and there is "engineering" here.
If you could write about some "forgotten" technical aspects of this beauty, you would probably get some strong upvotes as the support for the project.

Good luck!

I agree with @alexs1320 , I would love to read about the mechanics of this type of car :)

You are right about the old-tech. I added some. In my last post on the car linked up top, I talked a lot about the car and the tech used. This one is tear down only, and part three will be about putting it back together including sand casting a new exhaust manifold and building a carburetor from pieces. Also will contain a discussion on the Austin 7 racing community.

You got a follower :)

Thanks! If you like cars, you are at the right place, but i also do a lot on astronomy, and tech of other sorts as that's where my career has been. I'll be going down your blog too, thank heavens for google translate!

What a handsome car! I often go to classic car meetups here in San Diego! So glad to have joined #socalsteemit !

Thanks! It's not mine but I have done a bunch of labor on it. My dad is doing the restore, He is 90, and 8 days ago, while working on it fell and broke his hip. So he has had a very rough week, and had major surgery. Today I got him into a good rehab facility, and am hoping he will get back on his feet. We have decided I am moving in, so I guess I am going to be finishing up the wiring, the windshield, and interior, as well as the topand a bunch of little "Oh Yeahs". Major upheavals in both our lives, and maybe some opportunity to settle some old beefs and come together. (I wonder if I can block Faux Newz on his cable)

I’m sorry to hear about your father!
I wish for your father to heal quickly so you can take him out for a spin on his lovely car!🎀

Smedley is getting some love and attention very good. Looking forward to more as the work progresses.
