Fight for life in my backyard

in #snake6 years ago (edited)

Few moths ago I published this post:

Sometimes we go about our lives in the backyard, chatting and having family reunions, oblivious of the little dramas unfolding in the undergrowth. The perennial struggle of life and death taking place at smaller scale under our very noses.

A few days ago, I witnessed such a common, yet rarely seen, scene: a snake eating a frog alive.

My brother and I heard a sound like a bird chirping...

—Sounds like a little bird around here — I said
—Or it could be a frog being eaten by a snake —said my brother — let's see!.

Sure enough, we found a small frog struggling to scape the snake's grip. But the more it struggled the more the yellow snake unhinged its jaws and held it tighter at the same time. It chirped like a little bird in despair. But the poor thing didn't have a chance and was inevitably swallen alive by the predator.

We brought a camera and took some photos and a video, so the dramatic event was duly documented for future generations.

Only the cameraman was witnessing the event, while everyone around chit-chatted lively, in a humid, hot, tropical mid-morning.
