SMT's could be the new UBI

I'm so excited about the prospect of getting SNAX rewards from my Steem integration with @snaxteam that I started to think where this tokenization of people's activites might lead in the future. In my previous post I wrote about the things that could be tokenized. In the middle of the post, a thought came to me which I decided to leave for another post that SMT's (Smart Media Tokens) could become the new model for UBI (Universal Basic Income).

Various countries are experimenting with UBI model were a small segment of the population in a certain area is getting constant basic cashflow. This revenue is passive and recurring - you don't have to do anything to earn it and it comes to your bank account every month.

It's not a lot and obviously not enough to make a living but it's a financial cushion which provides security for a person to feel free to do whatever they want with their life.

The idea of the experiment is to see how it affects the individual's abilities to motivate oneself to seek new employment opportunities or even create one for oneself, like starting a small business or freelancing.

If the UBI experiment in a certain small areas goes well, certain countries could implement it nationwide.

Of course it could fail as well. When having constant basic cashflow some people could stop worrying about the future and sink into addiction swamp and degrate to the lowest levels of society.

I think SMT's have the potential to become a better version of UBI. Let's just say a person is earning small amounts of tokens every day. But the beauty is that one can earn tenths, perhaps 20-50 different tokens this way. They all be freely tradable with Steem on the DEX, such as Steem Engine.

This way the SMT tokens will start to have a real life value and create a significant cashflow for every person who will be using them.

Hypothetically speaking, let's just say we start earning some 20 tokens and get 10 of them every day (could be much more of course, but this is just an example). Their prices on the DEX will vary but let's say on average each token would be worth 0.05 USD. That's 10 USD per day revenue. Or 300 USD per month. Can you see the potential?

What if the value of each token on average is 0.50 USD, then a person is getting 100 USD worth of tokens a day or 3000 USD a month. Now we're getting somewhere.

All of this of course is hypothetical but I don't see any reason why it couldn't become a reality. The more people use those SMT's the more value they will have.

I call this model the new UBI because with the help of evolving AI, wearable technology and blockchain people will be paid for what they are already doing - engaging on social media, listening to a podcast, walking, exercising in the gym, eating healthy foods, sleeping, breathing, practicing playing the instrument, playing a public recital, drawing, reading a book, writing a book or an article, riding a bicycle, using public transportation, buying groceries, safely driving a car, sending emails, attending a meeting, writing reports, writing a blog, doing homework at school, teaching at school, vacuuming the floors, dusting the cabinets, gardening, using the internet, mining crypto etc.

Our imagination is the limit.

And contrary with the failure of the standard UBI experiement where the person could be unmotivated to do anything with their life and become addicted to unhealthy habits, SMT's could foster good habits and reward healthy behaviors instead.

Contrary with the UBI where one is rewarded basically for nothing, one still have to earn the SMT's by doing something valuable. The right rewards foster the right motivation.

Then a person could really have a freedom and financial security that UBI intends and start exploring limitless possibilities of life.
