Where I come from, these are called widow's walks. Husband would go to sea or to war and never return. The widows would walk around a high look out on their homes and watch and wait...

That's interesting! Maybe it's the same for these houses here... after all, these houses are build not far from the river and, long long time ago, they were on the limit of the city, next to the city wall...
