Minebox - upgraded specs
Just as a reminder: Minebox is a startup offering a peer-to-peer cloud storage network powered and secured by a blockchain, based on a reliable HPE hardware with 8 or 16TB HDD space and a Linux-OS provided by Minebox. A Siacoin wallet is preinstalled, unused disc space can be rented for Siacoins or Bitcoins. Files can be stored locally and backups are uploaded in a decentralized cloud (compared to "centralized clouds" owned by companies like Amazon or Google).
So minebox is basically a
- reliable backup storage system for data (secured by a decentralized blockchain-based cloud) and a
- possibility to earn some money by renting free disc space
They recently announced new specs of the hardware:
As I am not a tech nerd, I just copy & paste
- Processor: (1) AMD Opteron™ X3216 (1.6-3.0GHz/2-core/1MB/12-15W) Processor
- Cache Memory: 1MB (1 x 1MB) L2 cache
- Memory: 8GB (1 x 8GB) PC4-2400T DDR4 UDIMM NOTE: Total of 2 DIMM slots.
- Network Controller: Embedded Broadcom BCM5720 Dual Port 1Gbe LOM
- Storage Controller: Embedded Marvell 88SE9230 SATA controller
- Internal Storage: 4 LFF NHP SATA HDD cage
- PCI Slots: 2 standard (Low Profile) PCIe 3.0

Here a pic from their storage (located in Lower Austria, near Vienna).

I have to admit, I had preordered one as I was intrigued by the concept (although probably a little overpriced)- will let you know more once arrived and running.
What do you think about it?
Thanks stayoutoftherz for the post, I came across the minebox.io website last week and found it intriguing. I think it is a fantastic piece of technology and the idea rocks! Siacoin is a huge contender for Amazon and the likes and I feel it could take off in a massive way - especially as normal folks can be part of the service it provides to other users, just by having some empty storage space available! If i had a spare £600 I would definitely be buying one of these and i hope to in the future. It would be interesting to hear how the setup goes when you get yours.
Thanks for sharing your insights - I will for sure let you know how it went.
