Day of the Dead

One of the most deeply rooted traditions in Mexico is the Day of the Dead; Much has been commented on its origins and its gradual displacement by foreign customs, the truth is that it is a tradition that is celebrated in very different ways and at very different levels around the national territory, for example it has greater use in the southern states of Mexico than in the north, where American influence is greater, this time I will not talk about it describing its characteristic elements that it can be found on the Internet, but I will do it from the perspective of a child who was been trying to scare by adults so he wants to go to sleep early.

It was the end of October, the smell of cempasúchil flower (marigold) covered the entire block, the skeletons of china paper adorned all the doors, and the ornaments of “papel picado” were swinging across the streets illuminated by colored lights, everything was very festive as if we were going to celebrate something very big, wherever people could hear laughter and festive music, people went everywhere with their faces painted in white, accentuating their eyes in black to look cadaverous, women took out their colorful dresses, and any neighbor shared among the children candied fruit in the form of sweets.

At nightfall they placed a huge table under a tree and covered it with large white tablecloths that dragged to the floor, the dogs had fun scampering with the smallest children, and the turkeys hid themselves fearful after having freed the election of the owner of one of them to prepare “the mole” (a mexican dish).

After dinner, the grandmother would meet the youngest and began to tell us all kinds of fantastic stories, one of the ones I remember the most was the “Nahuales” who were people who turned into animals, now they do not seem so creepy,
but I remember very well that the grinding of the trees, the wind and the movement of the nocturnal birds, added an environment that made my skin goose bumps; in the tremendous darkness of the night and after hearing all that, any noise scared me, covered me with a sheet made of many pieces of old fabrics, as if it were something magical that would protect me from all evil.

So it was several years, until one day I woke up in the middle of the night, I got out from under my sheet and left the house to find a real carnival, the whole block was a dance floor, the speakers distributed over several houses repeated the same song, everyone was disguised as dead and the lamps in the form of giant skulls adorned all the houses, moments seemed like a procession that did not advance, had placed a kind of stable where they served all kinds of alcoholic beverages and people sat on huge wooden trunks, from that moment I lost my fear I went to where a neighbor was painting people, she covered my face with black and white to look deceased and I joined the huge crowd, hours more later I met a girl of my age, I took her out to dance and my heart started to beat faster, I was exaggeratedly happy celebrating the day of the dead.

My kids really like movies and books that revolve around the day of the dead. It's fun and lets their imagination run a little bit. More important it's a great way to remind the living to honor those who came before them by telling stories about them. We don't wait for a day for this in our house as our kids love to hear stories about the past and area always wanting yet another story.

Thank you, this experience was many years ago.

thanks for this attention

Thanks for your post. El Día de los Muertos seems to be a great tradition... I hope I can experience it one day.

I've found your article after @mmunited suggested it as part of the Pay It Forward Contest

Thanks for reading my post, I must clarify that in Mexico there are many ways to celebrate it, for some, it goes unnoticed, for others it is something solemn and for others a real party.

I think it is a pretty cool concept as it takes a lot of the fear from dying. Rather than an end, it is a celebration and galvanizing of memory.

Something will remain of each of us, there are people who died many years ago and still generate resources.

Hi @saulos. Wonderful explanation of Dia De Los Muertos. I believe it is one more interesting celebrations. I love the fact they celebrate the dead 'revere' them. Not forget them.

As you know @mmunited featured you in this week's @pifc's Pay It Forward contest. Please check out the contest and consider joining in, in the future.

Who would think that you will meet a girl worth a dance during the day of the dead? 😊 It seems a coincidence but everything happens for a reason.
