Green Smoothie - Love it or Leave it?

How do you feel about green smoothies?

Is your heart skipping a beat when you think of the deliciousness of a freshly made smoothie chuck full of super nutrition from all the greens that you just picked from your beyond organic garden?

Or is the thought of drinking that green stuff making you want to retch and run the other way?

For the most part, I love green smoothies. But I have to admit that I have made some pretty terrible ones. I hardly ever follow a recipe. But one time, my friend came over and she had brought one she wanted to try.

I had all the ingredients - mostly lemons and kale. The lemons went whole into the blender, skin and all. The recipe said to strain before drinking.

We skipped that step.

It tasted pretty bad, but we had to keep face in front of each other and drank the whole thing.

Let’s just say that for the rest of the day it was a good idea to stay close to the bathroom. 😂 An excellent cleanse. Lol.

Usually, I grab a bowl in the morning and see what the yard has to offer. Mint, parsley, lettuce, kale, collards, wild greens all find their way into that bowl.

I wash it several times. Then, the blender stacking begins.

First the softest ingredients, fresh fruit of some kind. Then the greens coarsely chopped. Next, if I us them, chia or hemp seeds. Frozen fruit on top of that.

I add water and push the Smoothie button on my BlendTec. If you have a regular house hold blender, you have to add the greens little by little to get a somewhat smooth drink.

Most of my smoothies have frozen bananas in them. I let them get very ripe before freezing them. They give sweetness and creaminess to the finished drink.

If you don’t have frozen fruit, add ice cubes. Believe me - you want your green smoothie to be cold! Or you are not going to like it one little bit.

And this green smoothie is purple curtesy of the Mulberries. Adding blueberries, mulberries, and black berries give the drink a color that makes it easy to sneak greens into the diet of someone not so willing to eat their greens. Just saying…

The greens for this smoothie included mint, parsley, beet leaves, chart, lettuce

I've never tried green smoothie but I do take home made green tea from the plants in my compound. I do moringa tea, then I have the herbal tea that helps treat malaria and an anti-bacteria. I am looking at the leaves we have in the compound and most of them will give you that staying near the toilet effect.😂😂😂👍

hahaha - I think it is different in your region. I know from African friends that they cook all their greens for safety. I saw in your posts that you wash all the greens - even for the rabbits - in salt water. Is that to kill bacteria?

Moringa is an excellent plant and I have a small Moringa tree I am planning to plant as soon as I have gotten rid of some more of the gophers. I had two of them eaten by those little beasts.

Yes, washing with salt water helps to kill worms, insect larvea and bacteria that are on the leaves. Yeah I do it for the rabbits too because they'll get sick if the eat leaves with such on them. We have to cook a lot to kill all this stuff because our region is very hot and helps breed them. Moringa is a great plant. It I don't take the herbal tea I take a glass first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

That, of course, is a lot of work. But better to be careful than to be sorry.
I am looking forward to my Moringa to grow. I am actually going to start a bunch of seeds to have extra plants - just in case...

I love a good green smoothie! Your lemon and kale story made me laugh! Once I made a juice for the hubs take on his drive to work. A few minutes after he left, he called and was was wondering why it was so spicy. I was so confused, until I checked the label on the greens I through in, and turns out they were mustard greens instead of kale! I felt soooo bad, but it made for a great story! haha
