Sonic Groove Live, Week 1, cover (?), Christian Gotthilf Tag, Was Gott tuth

in #sgl5 years ago

This is my entry for the first week of the Sonice Groove Live contest. I play a choral prelude, composed by Christian Gotthilf Tag. Earlier this week I published the score of this composition on my website (see link below). As it is my habit to post a recording together with the score, I have practiced this piece quite extensively in the last two weeks. So, why not play it again as an entry for this contest?
The distinction "original" and "cover" does not fit well with classical music. A large part of the classical musical heritage was written dozens or hundreds of years ago. It is the performance and the interpretation of a classical composition that has become to be considered the original work of art. As it is my own performance and original interpretation of this composition, I'm inclined to call it "Original". On the other hand, as I did not write this composition myself, you could argue it has to be considered a cover. Though it is a bit weird to call something a cover if there is no recording of an 'original'.

Anyway, the recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Voxus, of the Matthijs van Deventer-orgel in the Grote Kerk, Nijkerk (https://www.voxusorgans.com/en/product/nijkerk).

I love cake, so: Thank you!!

I think the term cover is tied more to a ‘song’. Nice to hear another rendition of this piece again 🤓

Fact is, as classical musicians we're not used to think in terms of original or cover. Would a jazz musician call his improvisation on an existing tune or song a cover?
The rules of the contest are more fit for pop songs than for other types of music.

That's true! Can you play Bach's cover of the BWV 565 please?

If there were a cover by Bach of BWV 565 that would mean he didn't compose it.
Which is actually what musicologists think nowadays: Bach did not compose his most famous organ work, somebody else did (with J. P. Kellner as a likely candidate).
