AziNungle of the harrowed face, was lit by the dancing flames, yet his eyes remained hidden within dark hollows. Despite his being alien to the others, it was recognisably distorted by a pain created to be eternal for all of them. One space was left among them, but they did not spread out, allowing the absent one his space, so that he is remembered by them.

He spoke. “I cannot reach far enough into the past to recall happiness and love. My mind always stops at that moment when I was helplessly forced to watch my world die. I refuse to extend their suffering by speaking of it again. It is time I end it. Let someone else speak, if they will.”

The other forms, each of a different outline hunched around the campfire, remained silent until one reluctantly spoke, his face pointed at the stars, as if still capable of hope. “I have spoken of my world, so I shall speak of another, on behalf of the one not among us; his world has no representative among us.”

They patiently waited, but he remained silent. Finally, one, afraid to understand, asked, “We are waiting, are you going to speak of them?”

“But I have! None are left, so it is as if they have never existed. I have spoken of what there is to tell. Is not their story as is the lack of his presence among us? A gap in the teeth we form, that daily must gnaw at the past?”

They each shrank further back into their thoughts, afraid. Eternally afraid, without hope of release.
