I could not help laughing when I say your pictures. The little balls in your picture look a lot like what we call in the Netherlands 'oliebollen'. It is a special treat during the days around New Year. We fry them and eat them with powdered sugar.
My daughter and I made chocolate chip scones this morning. They do look like your oliebollen!
