Senior Brain Power: Don't Waste Yours

in #senior3 years ago

Senior Brain Power: Don't Waste Yours - This is a new age adage that can help any senior enjoying life to retain their mental agility as they age. The human brain is one of the most powerful pieces of equipment known to man. It is said to be responsible for about 90% of all mental activity in the human body, including what we think, say or do. This information comes as no surprise as recent studies have shown that as humans get older, their brains actually decrease in size, from approximately two pounds for those in the child years up to a full adult's size. In order to preserve and increase senior brain power, there are certain things seniors should incorporate into their lifestyle.

Exercise: Physical activity is a great brain enhancer. Not only does it help the mind to increase its power, but it also has a lot to do with making the heart pumping. Cardiovascular exercise has been proven to improve circulation which increases oxygen flow to the brain and the ability of the brain to process information. Exercise has been recognized as a key to memory improvement, reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease, and increased brain power.

Diet: Studies have indicated that as the body becomes older, it requires less nutrition as compared to younger individuals. Research has also indicated that diets low in fat, sodium and cholesterol are beneficial in protecting brain function. A diet high in vegetables and fruits, low in animal products and saturated fats, can help improve brain function. A brain needs all the nutrients it can get, therefore it is necessary to increase the amount of vegetables and fruits consumed each day.

Exercise: Many seniors find joy in activities such as cycling, swimming, walking and gardening. Doing something you enjoy gives you a sense of purpose and releases endorphins, a natural mood enhancer. These activities also increase blood flow to the brain and assist in the production of growth hormones, another important element in brain function. As these activities become more advanced, brain function may also improve. It is important for seniors to ensure they engage in exercise that is compatible with their needs and does not cause them any injury or discomfort. Incorporate daily exercise into your senior's lifestyle to benefit from improved brain function.

The above mentioned are just a few ways seniors can improve brain function. It may be prudent for seniors to seek the advice of a qualified healthcare professional before embarking on any program. Some individuals may need medication or cognitive therapy to improve their brain function. For others, simply making a lifestyle change may be enough. Changing how you think and speak can lead to a new you, a stronger mental focus and improved brain function.

As you can see, there are many ways to improve brain power for seniors. There is no "cure" for Alzheimer's disease; however, there are medications that can slow down the progression of this disease. Cognitive behavioral therapy can teach you how to think and speak more clearly. Regular exercise can increase blood flow to the brain. Lifestyle changes can reduce stress and anxiety. As you can see, the key to improving brain function is to make changes in lifestyle and diet and to engage in cognitive behavioral therapy.
