Hacking, DDos, Site cloning & how to safeguard your account

Few months back, we witnessed a worrying incidence which got many steemians reading & learning about DDos (Denial of service) as steemit website was down for some days and most posts that were yet to be published got missing. Many steemians including myself published some posts to educate our followers about what all those stand for and why not to fear or belief Fuders which makes steemit a caring community. More recently, we have also witnessed major trading platforms like Bittrex, Hitbtc and Idex etc, having issues with DDos attack and coming back stronger.

Furthermore, in recent times, we have witnessed hackers and spammers upping their game and going as far as cloning popular decentralized trading platforms like Etherdelta (ED) and more recently Myetherwallet (MEW).

All these were confirmed in a recent tweet by MEW (myetherwallet) & Idex and going by their recent updates, Mew tweeted asking users to stay focused out there while advising users to update their OS immediately, Update browsers and use Chrome with site Isolation enabled.

For Idex, we got a more welcoming news as outlined below;

"Eth withdrawals are now functioning normally. however, Eth withdrawals that happened over the past 2hrs need to reset. All funds are safe and we appologize for the inconvenience"

Are Fuders beneficiaries in all these?

In a recent publication by William Suberg of Cointelegraph, titled "Exclusive: MyEtherWallet Сlaims Hacking Rumors Are ‘Stupid Lie’"

Cryptocurrency wallet MyEtherWallet (MEW) has told Cointelegraph that rumors about it being hacked are “FUD” and “a stupid lie.”
In a private message today, Jan. 9, the wallet provider categorically denied accusations circling on social media that hackers had gained access to their DNS, creating a phishing scam to gather login data.
The rumors that MEW had been hacked appeared to stem from developers of altcoin Ethereum Blue (BLUE) on Twitter , who posted a string of warnings about the DNS compromise, along with advice not to use MEW.

More so, he further posted that

Referring to BLUE’s tweets, MEW told Cointelegraph:

“MEW is not compromised. They [BLUE] are either maliciously spreading FUD to harm others, maliciously spreading FUD to boost their own coin's price, or just so incompetent and were confused. Regardless, it's a stupid lie.”
Interestingly,
Several of the tweets from BLUE today have already been deleted, but a screenshot of the original tweets was published in a reddit post, which has since marked the story as “fake.”
A reddit user who allegedly works for MEW replied to the post, stating that the wallet was “not aware of any compromises” and reminded users that they can always access the service offline.

So, from the above, does it mean that other entities might be taking advantage of recent DDos and Cloning of site to spread FUD against another entity just for their benefit or are we missing something here? Are there any legal implications of the action of Blue against MEW? Your thoughts & insights are welcome.

Going forward, it is a fact that the huge success in cryptocurrency has brought about many attacks from spammers and hackers with phishing links as such below are some few ways to protect your wallet from being hacked-

• Ensure you have an updated good anti virus installed
• Avoid any site with Http without the 'S", only trust https as cloners can easily use http with no "s" which stands for secure !
• Ensure your Operating System is updated
• Update your browser regularly and ensure you use chrome site isolation enabled.
• Best use trading platforms with 2FA activated.
• Be very vigilant and always look at the link you are going into, any rerouting of the link to another weblink address should be investigated and reported.
