Do Not Bug Out, Bug In or Relocate
Always plan to "bug in," not bug out. You should prepare well where you already live.
However, have relocation alternatives. Wealthy people, not as wealthy as you might first think, do this all the time. They do it by having rental properties. Even if you have very little wealth to invest in the strategy, you can still have a relocation site. By using Airbnb and owning a cabin for example, you have created a relocation site.
Your home should be your castle, but having relocation sites near you and around the world is a wise move. Recently, a friend of mine mentioned a friend of his who had a rental property in Costa Rica. His friend does not live there and does not plan to live there, but they keep the property as a rental and emergency relocation site.
Depending on the amount of wealth you have, you may have a single rental cabin in the woods near your home or multiple homes around the globe.
You cannot afford even a little land in the mountains with a simple cabin? Pool your wealth together with trusted family and friends to make it happen. While you and your family are not using the location, rent it out to cover the mortgage, taxes, and maintenance.
Do not "bug out" without a known good destination. Have a relocation site prepared in advance instead.

We are all so dependent now for basics like food, water and heating, any significant downtime of the grid would be a disaster for many.

I agree with you completely. I hear so much about bugging out, and there is certainly a place for that, but I think the best option in a bad situation is to sit still. Be prepared and wait it out right where you are if possible. Travel in bad times is far worse.

Thank you! The only way I'm bugging out is if my family is dead, and even then I wouldn't call it bugging out. It would be "going scalping."
I have a "bug out bag", but I also keep up with my "hunker down kit". Bugging out is a last resort.
I have a "get home bag" that I carry every day to work. It has all I need to survive in the woods indefinitely.
My house isn't in an ideal location but isn't in a heavy urban area either. I wish I was further out, so that is the main reason a cabin is of great interest.

Needs compared to wants is something I regularly think about to simplify and lower weight.
Okay, I'm at work. I was carrying my pack too. Your post is very extensive. I'd first like to take a step back and ask about EDC. That's the first layer of gear placed on top of a person's most important tool set: their skills.
My EDC includes many things that others usually do not carry. I also firmly believe in the "One is None, Two is One" strategy for essentials (knife, fire starter, compass).
I wear hiking boots every day as another example, so I never have to change my shoes no matter what is happening. Yes, I wear them with shorts in the summer, and I don't care if it looks stupid. haha
Me being me, I'm going to look stupid and out of place no matter what I do, so I don't worry about it (until or unless I need to blend in and go grayman, then I'll have some work to do).
As for EDC, here is what I carried back 2 and a half years ago.
My EDC is still similar, although it is always being tweaked and adjusted. I didn't show the 1911 and NAA mini-revolver which are also part of my EDC.
Awesome! Yes, you have a solid first layer then. I carry a firearm or two too, so I also have a blow out kit in a cargo pocket.
I do not have an optic though, and I should probably add one. That's a very good idea with the scope.
I originally got the spy glass to girl-watch. while at work. But it comes in handy for other things too, since I know longer have a job where I can see people.
Pilots are my inspiration mainly for the first layer by the way. I've read countless reports on downed pilots who had their gear off their bodies. Guess what? They didn't have their gear on the ground. It was destroyed or missing.
Keep your essentials on your body. If you survive the crash, you'll have your most important items with you.
Also, depending on what happens, I may have to drop my pack, and I cannot walk around with it on my back all the time either.
I do plan to add a "middle" layer though with a combat belt setup. They are called "battle belts" apparently, but I haven't decided on what all I'll put on it.

Thanks for the post. We have a cabin in the middle of nowhere we bought for just in case, but if travel were a problem, we would be out of luck. Also, it would rely on the electric grid to keep operational. There is so much to think of when one is trying to be prepared for anything.
I keep a life straw and a charger that can be used by cranking in my car. That is about as far as I have gotten with daily preparedness. Thank you for reminding me of some of the other aspects of survival which I generally don't care to think about!
You'd be surprised what cabins rent on airbnb. Are you renting your cabin out?

I agree with you brother. Home is option 1, relocate is option 2. A Bug Out scenario should be a last resort! But unfortunately the future is a mystery and plans could be altered. I always say make plans A-Z and alter if need be. Great post man! Awesome information! : )
Thanks! What do you think of the primary tip to have the sites setup in advance? Anyone can do it. You don't have to be "rich." The only reason I do not already have a cabin setup is because finding quality land is very difficult.

I agree about having lots of options and never knowing for sure what will happen. People at my work make jokes about me because I carry a kit. My backpack has everything I'd need to walk into the woods and never come out again.
One of my team members considers me his advanced warning system. He said if I disappear he's packing his stuff and getting out too. haha
P.S. I've followed you. You almost certainly have a lot of wisdom for me to learn from. I was an Intel Analyst in the Army in the past too. I'm very interested in learning survival skills as well!
I do believe in having a primary location setup but unfortunately I do not have any of my own personal property yet due to funding. But on the flipside I do have a location set incase I need to roll out quick, fast and in a hurry. It is kind of a spot where there is less likely to be any competition.
And you're not the only one that catches flak for carrying a kit but I just sit back and laugh about it. Because in the end I'll be ready to roll right away!
But someday I will have my own little spot with everything set up. I am trying to get a job that will fund this dream of mine!
