💡 Did You Know? #2 - The Speed Of Light

3:05 PM, I am driving with my friend John around the city. Copenhagen - the busy city life. Sunbeams are penetrating through the front window like there was no window at all. And just like that, a thought pops into my mind: "What if we could travel at the speed of light? How would it feel like?"

So I come home and do a little research about it.

The Speed of Light

The actual speed of light is 299,792,458 meters per second or 1080 million kilometers per hour (1.08×109). Crazy, eh? Thanks toWikipedia.

Okay, let's take an example to illustrate that. How long would it take to travel from Earth to the Moon at the speed of light? The answer is 1.3 seconds! It would look something like this.

Now that's what I call The Fast and The Furious. Lol.

Moreover, here is a video done by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to illustrate the speed of light using one trillion frames per second.

Last but not least, some time ago astronomers came up with the distance unit called the light year which is the distance the light travels in a year.

So if the distance from point A (you) to point B (your favorite dessert) is 1 light year away you will have to travel the whole year at the speed of light in order to reach your dessert.

Here are some REAL mind-blowing distances in light years:

  • 25 000 from Earth to the nearest Galaxy - the Canis Major Dwarf
  • 100 000 across our Galaxy - the Milky Way
  • 46.5 billion (yes, BILLION) from Earth to the edge of the observable universe

What would be the thing or a person or anything you would travel 1 light year for?

More coming up SOON! #ThankYou

That GIF of traveling from New York to the moon is great. I remember in 1998 after reading A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking, my mom was driving fast on a foggy night and a crack on the top of her headlight made a streak of light shine up. She thought that she was going so fast that her piece of junk Plymouth Reliant was bending the light. This ain't the USS NC-1701 Mom!

Ha! Your mom has figured a NEW theory: fog + light + Plymouth + speed = the speed of light mode. ;) Thanks for stopping by, @teachinthai!

I just love posts like these. It opens your mind to explore other possibilities. Like, what if you went a millionth of a percent faster than then speed of light? Would you then be able to see anything behind you? Because the light reflected to see objects wouldn't reach you.
Another thing: If you traveled faster than the speed of light, would you go back in time? As in, see events that happened in the past, since you overtake the light reflected by objects that took part in these events? I might be completely off the track here, but it's just some fun stuff to onder about. Very informative post!

Deep stuff, @dewet99! Would you like to try the speed of light yourself? At least going to the moon ;) I guess our minds can travel even faster than the speed of light. Thank you for your open-mindedness, mate!

Dude if I could travel at the speed of light, I'd literally... I was going to say visit other planets but I just remembered that you also said in your post some of the closer star systems are a few thousand/billion light years away. And spacesuits are expensive... But moving at that speed would be kinda fun. I'd be able to go home in between classes (home is around 3.5hrs from where I study) so it would be a pretty neat ability.
Keep making more of these science/physics based posts though.

You could go home in almost no time at all :) Will do, thank you for your support!

Very interesting facts. Difficult to understand fully without an open mind.

Thank you, Marcus!

Very Nice Information

Ohh it is unbelievable...
This is great information and this speed is very fast more than Fast and furious............
Thanks @wild-forest for this nice information..

Thank you, Hasnain, for stopping by! Would you travel at the speed of light?

I just want to travel at the speed of light but i don't know that I'll be successful or not...
But with help of Good peoples..

Congratulation wild-forest! Your post has appeared on the hot page after 30min with 11 votes.

Mind blowing facts you have mentioned. while reading your blog, I felt, as I was really traveling at the speed of light to moon. Wow, how it feels like to travel to moon at the speed of light.

Thank you, Pushpak. Quite fast, right? :)

Yes, you're right
