Can we squeeze out a place for linguistics in the SteemStem community?

in #science6 years ago (edited)

Americans tend to associate linguistics with “soft” sciences such as sociology, but for Europeans linguistics can take its place among the “hard” sciences. French and Russian science publications, for example, include articles on linguistics. Two examples:

[1] I remember during Soviet times how the famous magazine Наука и жизнь (almost 130 years old) used to organize Olympiads for math and linguistics (can't find any examples offhand, however)

Corpus linguistics, for example, makes use of computational techniques to explore language. Phonetics also makes use of physics and physiology to explore the nature of language sounds.

I've thought of starting a language community, but I don't have the time or organizational skills to bring this off. Joining the STEM community seems like a good alternative.
