Nigerians know next to nothing about wildlife conservation. Most of the animals that are kept as pets in other countries are killed and eaten by Nigerians. Even endangered animals are not left out

The way a country treats its environment and animals tells a lot about the people. I think we need to start having respect for other habitats, and leave the idea that everything is meat and food

In this write-up, I am going to point out the weirdest animals eaten by Nigerians

1. Dogs

Dog hunting is very common with Calabar people.. When you hear "404", this is the slang Calabar people use to refer to a place they normally have rendezvous where they eat dogs with chilled palm whine or beer. Although, some parts of the country also eat dogs but it's very common with Calabar and Ekiti people.

People breed dogs for a period of time before selling them to butchers. In Nigeria, a dog can be man’s best friend and at the same time a man’s best meal.

2. Snakes

I have phobia for snakes and this keeps me wondering why someone would hunt and eat snakes. Most times, when I see people hunting snakes, I just shake my head in disgust. When an unfortunate snake find its way to people's environment, they quickly hunt it, and it will end up in their pots.

3. Termites

If you live in Nigeria, you will probably know these insects. These insects normally come out en masse during rainfall and start circling around any bulb that they see.

Since these insects are attracted by lights, people switch on the light to attract them and then put it off when they are circling around the light.

Many of them will unconsciously drop inside the bucket of water and won't be able to fly anymore. This is when people pack, roast or fry them.

4. Cats

Cats are pets in many part of the world and I'm pretty sure people in other climes would be amazed know that some people kill and eat cats in Nigeria. Although, cat is also a domestic animal in Nigeria but that doesn't stop people from eating it. To kill a cat, people do not slaughter it, what they do is to put it inside a bag and then snatched it one the ground.

5. Dolphins

Dolphins don't attack humans, they are very friendly animals. If captured, preserve them, and let people pay money to go see them but here in Nigeria, it's a different thing entirely. Any dolphin that mistakenly swims to the sea shore is a goner

** 6. Frogs**

Not only Nigerians eat frogs. Some people from other climes eat frogs too and from my little findings, some parts of Asians eat frogs too

In Nigeria, people hunt frogs by the river side after which they are coated with pepper and roasted. As irritating as frogs look, it amuses me how people eat it.

7. Lizards

Another weird animal eaten by Nigerians is lizards. Lizard is mostly used to make local medicine by herbalists. They grind and dry it for a particular period of time and they use it to make concoction for anyone with ailment. In fact, I have friends who eat lizards and according to them, it tastes really nice when they’re roasted.

8. Bats

People also hunt bats during day time because they only see at night. Bat hunters go to their hives and use catapult to shoot them down. Bats are usually eaten by those living in villages

9. Monkeys

Apparently, a lot of people enjoy eating roasted monkeys. I know that if it was in a civilized country where things work, animal rights activists will be all up against molestation and culprits will be prosecuted for cruelty to animals

10. Crocodile

Lastly, crocodile is another weird animal eaten by Nigerians. Up to 10 crocodiles have been killed and eaten by people in my area. Well, we eat all manner of things that attracts all manner of strange animalistic diseases.
