Curiosities about the Moon #2

The only place beyond Earth that man has stepped on

The popular belief about the Moon and madness

This popular belief that in the phase of the full moon physiological changes take place in the human being that lead to a state of madness, has no scientific basis. A team of researchers from Laval University in Quebec (Canada) examined the relationship between lunar phases and the number of patients who come to the emergency room with psychological problems. They investigated panic attacks, anxiety and mood disorders or suicidal thoughts by contrasting them with lunar calendars. The conclusion is that the full moon has nothing to do with our psychological alteration. Goodbye to the myth The Moon does not increase the madness.

On the moon, dust particles levitate

The dust particles of the Moon levitate and, until now, it was not known why. According to a study published by NASA in 2017, the particular properties of moon dust combined with UV radiation, or with the Sun's plasma, would be responsible for these to float in the form of individual particles or clumps of dust. The reaction of emission and re-absorption of electrons inside 'microcavities' formed between the various particles, could generate large electric charges and intense repulsion forces that would explain this curious phenomenon.

The Moon moves away from Earth

Our satellite moves away from Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm per year. How do we have this data accuracy? Thanks to the astronauts and the ships that managed to reach the Moon in the past, they left five reflectors on the surface. Thus, by throwing a laser pulse towards these mirrors from Earth, it bounces and returns to us with the data. The precision is 1 millimeter. And why is it moving away from Earth? Because it accelerates in its orbit, because of the effects it causes on the terrestrial oceans.

There are two ships on the Moon

Starry, yes. NASA decided on December 17, 2012 to intentionally crash two space probes against the Moon. These were two twin probes from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory mission (Grail), designed to produce a gravity map of our satellite. When not having more fuel to continue their scientific investigations, they ended up embedded against a mountain of the north pole of the Moon.

Why does the Moon always show us the same side?

A long time ago, the Earth's gravitational effects slowed down the rotation of the moon on its axis. Once the rotation of the moon was reduced enough to coincide with its orbital period (the time it takes for the moon to circle the Earth) the effect stabilized. It is not a strange behavior, because many of the moons around other planets behave similarly
