Moth Under The Microscope 🔬

in #science6 years ago (edited)

My brother brought over a moth yesterday and we both had a look at it together. It was so fascinating I wanted to share it as soon as possible. Note before, the moth was already dead by the time I saw it, so this time I had nothing to do with it. Lol.

Upon looking at the moth, I was comparing it to the butterfly I viewed last time. I was noting the similarities and differences. A couple ooo and ahhh escaped my mouth as I examined the underside first before flipping the moth over to examine the wings. Honestly, I was not expecting to see anything as fascinating as a butterfly. Because let’s face it, a butterfly is much prettier and gentle like than a moth. Or maybe moths are just hairy little things hehehe.

There were so many things to look at, so many different features and details. I don’t think I can cover it all because it would probably bore most people and I don’t want to lose anyone half way. So let’s start with the underside starting at the head. That middle curled part you see between the eyes is its tongue.

Here is one of its legs, it reminds me a bit of the bee’s leg where it is pointy at the tip but it is double ended. Like a fishing hook how it has two sharp points. Not only that, the leg also has what looks like spikes on them!!!

Here is another leg which seems spikier and the underside of its wing. Doesn’t it look like a bird’s wing?!

Here is another view of another leg, this one reminded me of the butterfly where the scales on the legs are a little smaller. It is sort of similar. Somehow this view reminds me of a slightly plucked chicken leg.

Oh and here is its bum hehehe The orange part is the end of its body.

Flipping the moth over, we start from the head and move down its body. As we move down its body we can see how furry looking it is and the scales are much bigger and pointy like teeth compared to the butterfly.

Lastly the end of the wings where they overlap, I swear it looks like feathers but it is not. It also looks like a woven mat of some sort.

I was so amazed at how many different shaped scales the moth had and the amount of spikes! For some reason, the moth seems even more scary now. You wouldn't want to mess with them if you were an insect.

You're right it does look like a woven mat, amazing. I think I found this one more impressive than the butterfly.

Who would of thought, something so ugly could be so interesting lol

These are great close ups. You need to take your brother on a safari and collect samples.

hahahaha I better then remember to bring lots of jars so he can collect heaps of samples

Supersoju...I was curious as to your interests. I did not expect microscopic views of insects...

I am genuinely too scared to read this post. I looked at the preview, then clicked and quickly scrolled to the end, so I could like and reply. But worry not, you still delivered an experience - that feeling you get when you know you're about to be scared! I know it would be a fascinating post and I can tell with on quick skim with fingers half over my eyes, it's an informative and interesting post. I am just really, really scared of insects and I don't like moths.... I have moth monsters in my story too.

But I am impressed by your interests and I love the idea of someone posting on insects. I just need to slowly work on my phobia...

😂😂😂😂 You know, I am actually prettified of insects as well. Don't ask me how or why I am even handling them now because I don't even understand it myself. I had to wait a few days to make sure the insects I had were dead before I even opened the lid. The butterfly I had woke up from the cold slumber and it freaked me out. When they were alive I not only had them in a twist lock jar, I popped them into a double ziplock bag as well because I believe they could somehow magically escape.

However, looking close up is more interesting and the insect is actually different looking.
Also it is not just insects I look at, it just happens I got a lot of insects atm hahahaha
Maybe reading my post could help you overcome some of your insect phobia hehehehehe

Supersoju...I need to research you more carefully and figure out your background — as in I need to read more of your posts! You’re the quirkiest female I’ve encounter so far on steem and super entertaining. Maybe that’s the ‘super’ bit of your name. :)

This insect thing you’ve got going... It’s 4 am and my husband tells me to sleep. I’m telling him wait...I’m replying to a lady on steemit who is telling me about her dead insects....lol

😂😂 not as quirky as you, Mrs Introvert Chatterbox lol
Supersoju is actually my cat's nickname. My partner and I use it (plus her other various nicknames) because we are too lazy to get our own.

😂😂 4am!!?? Why so late lol. I just hope you didn't dream about insects..... because I did 😭😭😭

You are Dexter. :)

😂😂 Would you believe me if I told you I've never watched Dexter?
I just quickly read who Dexter was hahaha are you saying I'm psychopathic in a constructive way? hahaha or just a serial killer

First, OMG, you totally should. It's one of the best shows ever.

Second, lol, no. I meant cos of your slide collection. http://dexter.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Slide_Boxes

😵Blood Trophies!😵
Sick! Too bad he got rid of the second box in the end.
