INNOVATIONS SOLVING DRINKING WATER ISSUES FOR THE THIRD WORLD

in #science7 years ago

One of the most needed substance in the world is WATER. Water is a necessity. All living things in the world depend on water for sustenance. Your body weight is approximately 60 percent water. Lack of water leads to dehydration, which may lead to death. A person can only survive three to five days without water. That's how important it is.

For most part of the world, water is readily available. We tend to lower it's value and waste it because of the access we have to it. There are people in my country and other countries that don't even have access to clean water, poor hygiene and sanitation. An estimate of 3.575 million people die each year from water-related disease. Both adults and children.

Fortunately, innovators all around the world are developing methods for instant purification of water. Here are some:

1. LIFESTRAW

This makes contaminated water safe on the go. This innovative engineering purifies water from potential pathogens (Typhoid, cholera, diarrhea etc.) before they reach your lips. The Lifestraw is an inexpensive and clever way to deliver water to those in need. It is considered an icon of humanitarian product design.

2. “PURE” Water Bottle Filters Water With UV Rays

This method was developed by Timothy Whitehead during his trip to Zimbabwe. He invented this technique and engineering after witnessing the state and methods used the purify method in Zimbabwe. The pure water bottle is a device that is capable of filtering soiled and unpurified water in just two minutes. It does this by using a combination of 4 micron-sized water filters and a wind-up ultraviolet light system. This combinations removes up to 99.9% of impurities from any water source. This innovation can save lives and would be a blessing to developing countries.

3. LIFE SACK

The master minds behind the life sacks are Jung Uk Park, Myeong Hoon Lee, and Dae Youl Lee.

The life sack filters contaminated water by using SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection Process) technology and the bag’s thermal treatment process work together to kill deadly microorganisms and bacteria in the water. The sack can also be worn as a backpack for quick and easy movement from the source to the community. And it can contain up to 20 litres of water. As a bonus, the life sack also serves as a container for shipping grains and other food staples.

4. CERAMIC WATER FILTERS

In 2008, The Project Innovation Award Grand Prize was awarded to UNICEF and the Water and Sanitation Program for providing Cambodia with ceramic water filters. The filters are made from fired clay and the tiny pores of the ceramic material are small enough to remove virtually all bacteria and protozoa from any source of water.

All these inventions are worthy of praise and can only come from the heart.

Sorry dear get well soon

Great post, thanks.
After seeing this, I'd like to forward the readers to some fantastic books by legendary design professor Victor Papanek, first of all "Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change".
