Science Says Prolonged Sleep Can Lead To Stroke

in #science6 years ago (edited)

We sometimes have days and weeks when work and daily activities end up being very hectic and tiring, and most times we just want to end up in bed, and do nothing else but sleep. More so, when the weekend approaches, we find it the perfect time to just lie-in and lazy about in bed.

Well, when next you've had such a long and hectic week, and you are considering lying in bed all day, think about the study of how such an act can have a negative impact on our body.

So, I was surfing online and found out that according a research on prolonged sleeping, scientists say prolonged stay in bed especially from the morning period till late afternoon, which is also referred to as “Lie-in” is quite dangerous to the health.

Despite the pleasurable fact that being idle and comfy in bed can be addictive, the research by scientists from the Cambridge University showed that there are side-effects to the guilty pleasure, which we all seem to enjoy.

The Scientists who conducted the extensive research said that prolonged stay in bed is bad for the health.

According to sleep researcher, Susanna Jernelov:

“It’s basically like taking long flights and hanging around airports”

“It’s partly because of our circadian rhythm, so when you sleep in later, it’s like giving yourself a bit of jet-lag and jet-lag makes you less bright and perky,” she warns.

Before the research was actually publicized, various health studies had actually revealed that and also suggested that “Lie-ins” (prolonged stay in bed) are bad for the health, apart from just making one tired.

The further study by the Cambridge University, discovered that people who sleep much longer were 46 percent more likely to suffer from a stroke than those who sleep for the recommended duration.

The University of Cambridge conducted the study on 10,000 persons between 42 and 82 years of age for a period of 10 years. The intensive research led to the result and conclusion of the findings that were released through numerous online publications.

As scary as the findings may be or sound ( – the findings which may still be argued upon); it would be highly advisable to adopt a healthy sleep pattern or lifestyle and do whatever it takes to avoid the negative impact and effects of “lie-ins” on our body.

So, when next we feel so tired and desire to just snuggle down into a warm duvet and stay all day in bed after an exhausting week, think about having the adequate sleep duration of between 6 - 8 hours, and try not to over-do the sleep, or decide to relocate to dreamland for a long time.

In other words, sleep in moderation.

Like they say, there is no rose without a thorn. Or more commonly, there is often bad attached with good and every good things has a dark side.

I think that it is also important to get some constant sleep: a similar amount everyday! This helps a lot for a healthier life ^^

You are very right @lemouth. We can't manoeuvre nature too. Sleep is equally essential for full body functionality.
Thanks alot for sharing your thought @lemouth
