Why Are Our Brains Split Into Left and Right Hemispheres?steemCreated with Sketch.

Old thinking

As we all know our right brain is the creative one working on new Steemit ideas, and our left brain is running all the logical parts of our brain, but new research in neuroscience is showing that the division we have in our minds eyes is not so straightforward.

I've seen a human brain at anatomy classes at university, and the first thing that strikes you about it is how similar both the hemispheres are - they appear almost identical. It wasn't until nearly the 20th century that scientists starting working out the working divisions between them.

New thinking

Neueroscientists have been working out why the divisions exist for some time now, and researchers at Ruhr University, Germany have recently published an article in the journal Neuron outlining how it all happens.

To be honest it's all fairly simple. Different tasks are sent to different parts of the brain to allow the tasks to run apart from one another. A bit like a one core CPU running 2 threads. This is what we call in I.T. 'parallel processing'.

Gene experiments have been done to try and discover where this asymmetry comes from, and its been linked to some 30-40 genes which most believe also make us left or right handed. Some studies go further and state that our sex has a hand in the genes that decide our left or right handedness.

Finally, its even been suggested that this asymmetry may switch according to seasonal changes or other cultural norms, so our left/right hand fate is not fixed for life. I best go press 'Post' on this Steemit post now with my left hand!

Steem on - left or right!

Very great post. Insightful.

Cool username - be sure & use both hemispheres ;)

Interesting -- especially that it can be affected by seasonal changes. I'd never heard that before.

My left hand writing looks like chicken scratch, but I'll have to try it and see if it sparks some new ideas. Who knows? 😀

The non-dominant hand is really your soul talking. Here's an exercise for you:

  • Write down any question that is currently troubling you with your dominant hand.

  • Pause for a few moments, then write down your answer with your non-dominant hand. Let it take its time. It processes are slower than your dominant hand, but it can delve MUCH DEEPER.

  • Look over result. It will surprise you. This is your intuition and true heart talking.<3

  • There will be questions you won't want to ask. But ask them!

From time to time don't ask the non-dominant hand any question and just let it write anything freely ... again the results will surprise you :)

Steem on! - left or right ;) Best of luck Trilby! (try it on your coffee break this morning!)

I'm ambidextrous and can actually write well with both hands, and I do feel the seasonal differences over time. Try creatively writing with your non-dominant hand and the results will surprise you Trilby = creativity unleashed! ;)

Both sides of my brain have been fighting for years and are still not speaking (maybe that explains my writing)

Ha ha! Pilgerian overload probably @richq11 :)

Could be! I'm working on a story unraveling the mystery of Ayers Rock right now!

Ha ha! Pilger would be proud of you ... do forward me it in a link when your done :))
