Now a group of researchers from Donghua University, in China, have managed to synthesize a type of silk similar to that of the spider using genetically modified silkworms, using the already well-known gene editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 and hundreds of thousands of micro-injections into the fertilized eggs of silkworms.
