We knew this would come, we knew it was a matter of time before robots would be part of armies, along with soldiers as one more cog in the killing machine, be they flying drones with fire capabilities or mind-guided robotic dogs, as is the recent case of the Australian army.

A branch of the Australian government called RICO (Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation & Coordination Office) has created a robot for combat use within the framework of a new technology called "Robotic Brain Interface", this technology includes two tools: a robot dog and a mixed reality glasses

Una rama del gobierno australiano denominada RICO (Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation & Coordination Office) ha creado un robot para uso en combate en el marco de una nueva tecnología denominada "Interfaz robótico cerebral", esta tecnología incluye dos herramientas: un perro robot y unas gafas de realidad mixta.

The mixed reality device used is Microsoft's Hololens 2, which is connected to the soldier's brain through electrodes capable of measuring his brain activity, once the brain waves are detected, they are sent to a simple Raspberry Pi that converts the signals from the brain into instructions that can be understood by robots.

El dispositivo de realidad mixta utilizado es la Hololens 2 de Microsoft, que se conecta al cerebro del soldado mediante electrodos capaces de medir su actividad cerebral, una vez detectadas las ondas cerebrales estas se envían a una sencilla Raspberry Pi que convierte las señales del cerebro en instrucciones que puedan ser entendidas por los robots.

For the demonstration carried out in collaboration with the University of Sydney in Australia, the Vision 60 robot dog model, owned by the Ghost Robotics company, was used, but according to its creators it can be used with any type of autonomous device, which makes this tool a much more versatile system.

Para la demostración realizada en colaboración con la Universidad de Sydney en Australia, se utilizó el modelo de perro robot Vision 60, propiedad de la compañía Ghost Robotics, pero según sus creadores puede ser utilizado con cualquier tipo de dispositivo autónomo, lo que convierte a esta herramienta en un sistema mucho más versátil.

According to the soldiers who participated in the demonstration, this technology not only allows the robot to be controlled and monitors its video feed, but it can also keep the team alert about the environment and allow the team leader to control all the movements of the battalion, all of which through the brain-robot interface.

Según los soldados que participaron en la demostración, esta tecnología no solamente permite controlar el robot y monitorizar su transmisión de vídeo, sino que también puede mantener al equipo alerta acerca del entorno y permitir al jefe del equipo controlar todos los movimientos del batallón, todo ello a través de la interfaz cerebro-robot.

Por un lado no se puede negar que este tipo de inventos resultan fascinantes pero por el otro no hemos de olvidar que todo esto está pensado para cargarse a nuestros semejantes.
