Water scarcity isn't such a distant problem
Water scarcity is a growing problem at a global level, this problem is mainly caused by serious imbalances in distribution in the world and if we don't solve it in the coming decades it will become a distressing fact for many people on the planet.
More than 3 billion people in the world have to endure water shortages for at least a month, while 500 million live permanently in this serious shortage. In these cases it's important to look at science and technology and see them as allies and carriers of solutions.
Pollution, drought and storms must be tackled through knowledge as a way to propose solutions. It's still necessary to advance seawater desalination technology to optimize the process and reduce its energy cost. Green chemistry can help to reduce pollution, while land management and reforestation activities can help to mitigate climate change.
Environmental actions are also necessary, plant improvement must continue in order to achieve plants that are more resistant to drought and more productive, and genetic editing will be a fundamental factor for this.
It is such an irony that there is a need for water in the south of the world and there is an abundance of water in the north of the world. Water levels are rising in the north of the world and people in Britain are at the risk of being flooded.
If only companies could important fresh water to the people that need it then I don't think there'll be much problem.
