Science Pills: What microwave background radiation is?
Every part of the universe emits electromagnetic radiation, the Sun for example at 5000ºC of visible radiation. Our bodies, much colder, emit infrared radiation that's detected by the thermo-cameras, much less energetic than visible energy.
From all directions in the sky, we receive a very low energy microwave radiation as if emitted by a very cold body: at minus 270ºC.
What's that temperature spread all over the sky?
When an object moves away from us we observe its less energetic radiation, the light from a galaxy that moves away tens of thousands of kilometers per second appears reddened. Red light is less energetic than blue light, if a source of radiation looks extremely low energy it's because it moves away almost at the speed of light.
What do we see moving away from us at the speed of light in all directions?
It's thought to be the light of the Big Bang, the same light that flooded our entire universe at the time of its creation.
