Citizen science is a great way to involve children and adults in discovery and contribute to scientific research and conservation. Project FeederWatch through Cornell University is a great way to get involved in citizen science. You can learn more at the Project FeederWatch website.
I typically watch birds on Saturday and Sunday. This is my report for 31 December 2016 through 1 January 2017.

Bird Watching Notes
Saturday
Saturday was a partly cloudy day with abundant sunshine at times. The day started with a subdued sunrise due to the clouds.
Original Photo
Most of the day I did not observe any birds at the feeders. There must have been a predator stalking my feeders. Most birds are smart to stay away from the feeders when a predator is about.
Toward the end of the day I observed birds at the feeders and was able to take a few photographs of the visiting birds.

Sunday
After a long night of New Year celebration fireworks Sunday dawned with a gorgeous sunrise.

A squirrel came by to gorge on peanuts. And for desert the squirrel ate some black-oil sunflower seeds.

Downy Woodpecker
The Downy Woodpecker is another woodpecker that is common to eastern Nebraska. The Downy Woodpecker visits my feeders very regularly and is especially fond of peanuts.
