in #science8 years ago

Citizen science is a great way to involve children and adults in discovery and contribute to scientific research and conservation. Project FeederWatch through Cornell University is a great way to get involved in citizen science. You can learn more at the Project FeederWatch website.

I typically watch birds on Saturday and Sunday. This is my report for 24-25 December 2016.

Bird Watching Notes

Saturday

The weather on Saturday was cold, foggy, and frosty. The fog persisted most of the day. The cold and fog does tend to cause ice to form on surfaces. I awoke to find my tree near the feeders covered in ice.

Original Photo

The first critter at my feeder site was not a bird. It was a familiar squirrel still fattening up on peanuts.

Original Photo

European Starling

The first bird to show up at my feeders was a European Startling.

Sunday

On Sunday I was awaken by the sound of thunder, rain, and wind. The rain lasted all day and coated my window making it difficult to take pictures of the birds. The wind and rain kept the birds away most of the day too.
