Are Young People Losing Sleep Over Their Social Media Addiction?

in #science8 years ago (edited)

A new study that was recently published in the Journal of Youth Studies, discovered that about 1 in 5 young people are waking-up during the night in order to check their social media accounts. Researchers suggest that this avid night-time checking is making those teens feel more tired at school, compared to their peers who don't obsessively check their social media accounts.

The study involved over 900 participants who were between the ages of 12-15 and they were asked to complete a questionnaire, answering questions about how often they would wake up to check their social media and about how happy they were with numerous aspects of their life: friendships, appearance, and school life etc.

Of those who reported checking their social media account every single night, they were seen to be at least 3 times more likely to say they were tired at school. And for those who were tired and unsatisfied with their performance at school because of the constant tiredness, they also reported being significantly less happy.

Researchers suggest that social media 'invades' the sanctuary of the bedroom and therefore, there are some who caution the obsessive use of night-time social media by teen and children. But in all fairness, there could also be a number of variables that are contributing to the individuals tiredness, and might not be a sole result of their time spent online. Scientists suggest that more study on this topic is needed in the future, specifically those with large participation samples.

It's estimated that roughly 7 in 10 Americans use social media on a regular basis in order to connect with their friends and loved ones. For now, Facebook still remains the most widely used social media platform. For billions of people, social media has become a part of their daily routine and it's estimated that at least three-quarters of the Facebook user population, also chooses to use Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest.
