The Death of Cancer - Vincent DeVita [Recommendation]

Book Recommendation 2.png

Out of the numerous science books written about cancer, this is one I would recommend. I am specifically saying science books because there are probably thousands of books written about miracle cures for cancers and most of them may not be written with, for the lack of a better formulation, good science conduit in mind.

As of such, despite the title, the book doesn't provide irrational ideas, arguments, or claims. But, in my view, it conveys rational optimism for the future and, for the present.

The author, Vincent DeVita, is a professor of medicine at Yale and he was the director of NCI (National Cancer Institute - US) between 1980 and 1988. DeVita brought a great contribution to medicine by developing a cure for Hodgkin's lymphoma, using a chemotherapy 'cocktail'.

You know what I hate the most? That suck a good science book comes under this horrible and unrepresentative title; the book cover isn't great either.

Should you decide to follow my recommendation and read the book, here's what you should expect:

  • a recent history (starting late 1800s) of the medical therapies (and mutilations) for the treatment of cancers
  • indepth description of practices involving radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery
  • detailed history and description of combination chemotherapy and its results in pediatric cancers
  • key names and contributors in this field and their relationship with one another
  • author's personal history and journey particular to this field of research (the book kindof reads like an autobiography)
  • author's personal battles with cancer
  • prospects about future therapies and approaches for the treatment and prevention of cancer - from an inter-disciplinary, less toxic, and less invasive standpoint. Genomics will be a key player.

So, overall, no miracle diets, supplements, extracts, and other types of unfounded hypes which you find in popular 'best-seller' books. What you get though, is a more grounded, current, and real perspective from someone who's been working in the field; which, in my view, is better. Here's the link (non-affiliate):
