Vitamin D still "works" even if you're not taking magnesium supplements
Role of Magnesium in Vitamin D Activation and Function (Uwitonze and Razzaque, 2018)
Tl;dr: magnesium (Mg) is a cofactor for tons of enzymes, a few of which are involved in the conversion of cholecalciferol into 1,25-(OH)2-vitamin D3 (active vitamin D) or 24,25-(OH)2-vitamin D3 (inactive vitamin D).
Highlights from the study: 1) sunshine is the best source of vitamin D QED
Mg is the 4th most abundant mineral in the human body after calcium, potassium, and sodium.
Most Mg is in bone and teeth.
Foods high in Mg: almonds, bananas, beans, broccoli, brown rice, cashews, egg yolk, fish, flaxseed, green vege, milk, 'shrooms, nuts, oatmeal, pumpkin, sesame seeds, soybeans, sunfower seeds, corn, tofu, grainz.
Admittedly pretty awesome Figure:
Most interesting line: "Mg deficiency results in reduced 1,25-(OH)2-D3 ... and has been implicated in Mg-dependent vitamin D-resistant rickets."
If there actually is: 1) vitamin D-resistant rickets; and 2) Mg actually fixes it; then 3) WOW interesting mayhaps I stand corrected.
I stand corrected.
