The Amazon manatee is the smallest of the world's man-made manatees, ranging in length from 2.8 to 3.0 m and weighing up to 450 kg. Its dark gray leather is thick and strong. Most individuals have a white spot on the ventral region. This feature, along with the absence of nails in the pectoral fins, helps to distinguish it from the marine manatee and the African manatee. The Amazon manatee is also the only one that occurs exclusively in freshwater, and can be found in all the rivers of the Amazon basin.

Thanks for following the blog. In the past, manatees have been heavily hunted for their flesh and hide. Nowadays, the Amazon manate is classified as a "vulnerable" species, and is assisted by recovery projects to increase the number of individuals within the species.
