"My Electric Mosquito Net Project with Silica Fabric Insulator"

Let me share with you my very simple project during my academic years. This addresses one of the most serious threats to human beings; the mosquito carrying diseases. Such diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and many viral sicknesses could possibly kill adult human being. Mosquitos can breed in open water areas and containers and can multiply as fast as we know. Aside from having hygienic surroundings and environment, it is necessary to protect people from these insects. And the most efficient way to drive away mosquitoes is to exterminate them.

Mosquitoes are primarily attracted to warm moist and carbon dioxide therefore the best way to keep mosquitoes away from you is to reduce carbon dioxide emission or to apply mosquito repellant. Sealing all possible entrance of mosquitoes or installation of air-conditioning appliances to keep your home cool to avoid sweating could also be effective against these insects. However, constant application of these repellants each night is laborious. Additionally air-conditioners consume too much energy and are too expensive especially for us Filipinos.

This is why we tend to settle to mosquito nets just to save us from the troubles that these insects brought to us. Mosquito nets have also played an important part in our lives and have become the most common solution to mosquitoes’ dilemma. Conversely, in our advance world today, technology and inventions are inevitable, thus these mosquito nets can be improved into a more advance innovation; electric mosquito net with ceramic insulator.

Electric Mosquito Nets (EMN) could protect us from mosquitoes and also from other types of small flying insects which annoy us during our tight sleep at night. EMN is derived from electric mosquito rackets which we used in killing mosquitoes in our home. It could efficiently shield us by covering the entire space of our bed. It is a lot better from an ordinary mosquito net because of its capability to eradicate mosquitoes while we are sleeping. I know it’s just simple but I believe that it’s a good approach against mosquitoes if not the best.

Description of the Design

The size of an adult mosquito is directly proportional to the density of the larval population and the food supply within the breeding area. According to some research, the ideal mosquito net size should not exceed 0.0475 inches opening. As this invention is designed mainly for Filipinos, the dimensions are also based on the average height of Filipinos and so as its cost. The EMN is primarily composed of fabric insulator made of silica fabric with 2 mm thickness and a copper screen of 18-mesh size or about 0.0394 inches opening.

High voltage isn’t really necessary; instead the current is more important. Based on the properties of the existing electric mosquito rackets, 16.7 miliampere (mA) is enough to kill mosquito. Given this detail, D size battery can be used as it could store as much as 12000 mAh of current. Hence, two pieces of D size battery are enough to provide us enough current for 7 to 8 hours every night.

According to published research, the average height of Filipino is 5’5”, thus the average arm length is 28 inches or 2.25 feet. Hence, the insulator covers up to 2.5 feet from the base or ground. Space allowance is provided to make sure that the person sleeping can freely move. This also allows cool air to enter the fence or the net and the silica fabric keeps the inside lower areas cool to provide a pleasant nap due to low thermal conductivity.

EMN is connected to the screen by sewing using a thick yarn. Conductive screws of sizes ranging from 2 to 4 cm connect the screen to the steel support and edges. The steel supports are inserted in a socket weld base to help EMN maintains its balance. A sliding door is then put in the screen as the main entrance and exit. Two panels and two grooves slide and pass each other. When open, that means 2 panels on the same side are stacking over another and therefore, there is a 3 ft. opening.

The switch and the rechargeable battery are all put inside so that it can only be turn ON/OFF when you are inside the EMN. An emergency switch is not needed because you can directly pull out the battery or the source from inside the EMN since it is already provided with an insulator, the person trap inside can put off the power of the EMN so that the person outside can take off the EMN safely.

The material used for the screen was copper because it is cheap yet has very good elastic property. The copper screen is 18-mesh or 0.0394 inches opening which is the same size with the ordinary mosquito nets. Copper is ideal for the product because of its ductile property, thus when a compressive stress is applied from the inside of the EMN, the outside part of the screen which experience tension will just bend.

To prevent copper from corrosion, precaution notes in the product are provided to instruct on how to prevent copper corrosion. Silica fabric is also ideal to the product due to its flexibility and its high resistance property to thermal shock, and low electric conductivity which lowers the possibility of getting electrify which could cause flames. Moreover, silica fabrics have high durability.

P.S. the images shown are not the exact EMN design. Thanks for your time reading my post!

That's awesome!

Is the current of the electricity low enough for baby's skin though? You know how babies/toddlers/lil kids tend to roll around when they sleep, and might touch the screen.

It could shock a lil bit but it's safe :)

Awesome invention for sure, especially for tropical countries👍

Thanks for your sharing

You're welcome :)

Cool ng project mo hehe.

Thanks up hehe

Im learning a lot from you. Thank you migo.

You're welcome miga :)
