I have heard so many in this last period on how to decrease our impact on the planet and I shared it through my posts on all possible platforms.
But I never thought it would be possible
to capture CARBON DIOXIDE in the air and turn it into USEFUL PRODUCTS.
This is what the Swiss company, based in Zurich, the CLIMEWORKS is proposing to do.
According to which, through its activity by 2024, it will be able to capture from the atmosphere 1% of the global emissions produced by human beings.
The question arises spontaneously but what useful products is it possible to get out of the Co2?
For the time being carbon dioxide can be transformed into FERTILIZERS, FUELS, GASES to make carbonated drinks although other uses may be discovered in the future.
But how does the whole transformation process take place?
CLIMEWORKS plants absorb CO2 directly from the air through a filter consisting of a substance composed of porous granules modified with AMMINE, ie compounds containing nitrogen, managing to bind the Co2 with the humidity of the air.
The process continues with the filter - that can be reused several times - heating at about 100 degrees centigrade which releases Co2 concentrate ready for new uses.
Even if it is a phenomenal and innovative project, it has raised many doubts among the insiders as a single plant does not have sufficient production capacity to achieve the goals set by the Swiss company.
To ensure that our planet remains at a temperature that does not exceed 2 degrees Celsius compared to what it was before the industrial era, it would take 250.000 installations like Climeworks spread all over the world, this would reduce 1% of global CO2 production.
Let us not forget that carbon dioxide is the main gas responsible for the greenhouse effect and the time has come when we can not give up and face the situation of our Planet that pours on our lives.
According to Mauna Loa Observatory the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere had hit 400 ppm and now scientists have long recommended to maintain carbon dioxide totals below 350 ppm to counteract the effects of climate change.
The difficulty of reaching the objective that Climeworks proposes, is not only for the necessary industrial commitment on a global level, but also for the stellar costs considering that it takes about $ 400 a ton of captured carbon dioxide.
I think that despite there are less expensive systems and however effective as reforestation and the intensification of green in the cities, every new project that tries to improve our environmental impact it deserves to be known and widespread.
This is because the costs of a new technology can be lowered over time and make an unattainable project feasible until a few years before.
COMPARISON OF Co2 REMOVAL APPROACHES
However a drop of water in the middle of the sea like the CLIMAWORKS surely it can not change the pre-existing productive system, no it can not change the world, but it can be an example to show that change is possible.
We must abandon obsolete and no longer practicable systems and invest in systems that are compatible with the environment because:
the life of all the inhabitants of the Earth is in danger, NOBODY EXCLUDED.
