What does God expect Christians to do with those who have harmed him? God expects us to forgive and offer love to those who have hurt us.

In Genesis 45: 4-5, the Scriptures say:

4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, Come near now. And they approached. And he said: I am Joseph your brother, the one you sold for Egypt. 5 Now, then, don't be sad, or regret selling me here; because to preserve life, God sent me before you.

The story of Joseph is an ancient story that illustrates the merciful attitude that God expects us to assume in our dealings with those who have harmed us. It is an example of the love that Christ showed. Although Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave and tricked his father into believing him dead, when he faced them during his time of need, his love and forgiveness were revealed. Demonstrating extraordinary faith in the powerful divine providence, Joseph confesses his belief that God used the betrayal of his brothers as a means to free his family during the time of famine (Genesis 45: 7). Joseph's forgiveness for the sin of his brothers is so complete that he kisses and cries with joy when he finds them once more. Fraternal forgiveness is expressive, altruistic and is offered in such a way that it helps the beneficiary.
