Around Bornholm/DK, sailing to Arnager [vid + eng subs]

We had a week's vacation and we thought:

"It's been a long time since we've done round Bornholm"

Of course the wind forecast was perfect (not), right from the north, so we went on the cross.

We started very late in the evening, about 9:30 pm. Actually no problem, but there was the 4 hours machine ride to get through the "Haff" and the canal. I didn't put that on video once. First of all it was pitch-black and secondly we were just looking for these stupid gillnets. It is not so easy to recognize these grey rods with a diameter of about 30mm and then to find the end and beginning of the construction. There are no reflective markings ...

Once we were finally on the Baltic Sea, sails up and close-hauled. There starts the video ;)

In the morning and during the day the wind turned down - almost down to zero :( Since we actually left one day earlier as planned we had already thought about drifting. But when the wind comes up and we do the 12 remaining miles to Bornholm, then we would have arrived at Arnager in the darkness. Since there is a massive reef around Arnager and the approach is unfired, I wanted to do this in daylight.

I think the following pictures shows the "problem" quite well:
Here a cut-out from the CM93 cards. Looks quite problem-free, except the stone field directly in front of the harbour...

The BSP maps show a different picture. The fine red line is the 2m depth line.

And this is what the detailed map looks like. So it's a stupid idea to approach at the port from west or south...

In addition one should know that the approach channel directly before the port is about 12m wide (and 2m deep). Since I wanted to have Selene backwards, I turned the ship directly in front of the harbour entrance. The stern was less than 5m from the quay wall away and the water was already only 1. 5m depth. With a 35. . . 37ft yacht you manage to turn there quite well there, even if it is a close call.

For the rest, just watch the video. The ambience cancels out the complicated mooring. It was so nice that we stayed even one day longer ;)

Do they have those fishing nets going all the way from shore and far out in the sea there too? Typical Danish thing, and it's a miracle we haven't been hitting one yet. Covered it a bit in my recent Klintholm post.

in the german side it's OK - typical german .. there is is a rule for everything.

On the Polish side of the Haff it's anarchy - those things are everywhere. To sail there against the wind is quite a challenge, not because of the sailing but after every turn you do, you head straight into such a thing.

Most sailors there told me that they don't sail at night - it's just too dangerous to get stuck in such a thing.

When I go there in the dark I usually use the fairways. Even if it means to use the engine, regardless if the wind is good for sailing. You can see more (no sails in the line of sight), deck light switched on and someone at the bow watching out ;)

is Beautiful bridge

Sadly, as far as I know it's now closed.

Needs a lot of repairs.

What an adventure, @kuttmoped! Wishing you fair winds and following seas!

Thanks :) There are some more videos comming, This one was getting a bit long. Actually we sailed around Bornholm. More will come soon (need to do some cutting first)

PS: I left a follow, my girl is a big Israel fan :)

Thank you very much @kuttmoped, and thanks to your girl as well! 😀 I appreciate it a lot when my little country Israel gets some recognition and fans from different parts of the world. Cheers!
