Construction of a Boundary Wall : Mud play

in #rural-india6 years ago (edited)

Even in the modernisation age, when all the infrastructure are growing at a rapid pace. New building were built on strong foundation around the world. There are still many areas where , people depends on MUD/ CLAY to make there architecture.

Hello Steemians...before Cement were brought to use to build strong architecture, people use to play with Mud to make their building.

I believe, mud/ clay has been intrumental in making house since the Neolithic ages. Earlier civilisation use to make houses using mud.

However, even today the glimpse of the mud architectural is quite visible in many remote areas. The legacy has been carried on many village areas.

Although , it is very rare to see complete mud house, but using mud for plaster in place of cement is common sight. Today I come across one such construction, where mud were used in place of cement to construct a wall.

To start the construction, first of all , the mud/ clay were brought in at one place.

Then some amount of water is mixed on it , to make a proper mixture

The mud and clay needs to be properly mixed to make it a thick liquid mixture. The best way for mixing is by uusing the leg.

I remember, as many use to make juice from grapes, using grape dances in a wooden container, similarly here the masson, used his leg in same way to make a mixture.

The water and mud ratio must be proper to make a sticky combo, which can be helpful for sticking the bricks one upon the another.

As bricks are harder material, it is quite necessary to make, the mixture in such a way, so that bricks get stick with each other using the mud/clay.

The mixture prepaired are then use as plaster or joining material. The mud mixture are poured upon the bricks, and flattened propelry across the bricks, so that more bricks can be join upon it.

The masson used all his masterly experience and skills to join the bricks upon bricks to make a stronger wall. Even i tried to shake the dried wall by pushing it, however, it is stronger enough to make me loose my strength.

One of the economical way to make walls at very cheaper rate. No bothering of buying cement, also the market for cement is sky rocketing due to heavy increase in demand.

However, people are smart enough, to find an alternative by taking the leafes out from the ancestors book and using mud instead of cement for making a boundary wall👌

Efficient utilisation of mind and money👌

Hope you all find this post quite intetesting......another one from my native place - Glimpse of Rural India.

We are building pizza ovens and wall with clay mixed with straw or use it to make walls using broken concrete instead of bricks. Part of the Permaculture idea....
visiting you from the Alliance :)

Thanks @mariannewest we also use mud stove for cookin using charcoal and wood

Looks like a great wall!! We have lots of clay where I live!

Thanks @simgirl you can make one if needed😉 we have mid houses as well

Thanks for sharing this process! It's great to see natural material being used. How great you were able to learn from the master mason :)

@sagescurb thanks...there is many to explore...even the illeterate mason have many knowledge to grab on

Oh I have seen something similar to this, do you make the bricks also or just the mud to hold them into place. Here we use cement which is a combination of sand, gravel and water mixed and turns very hard in the sun.

@crazybgadventure in town and cities sand cement gravel are common....here in rural areas too now a days its common...however in our earlier days we use to have mud houses...and now a days mud are used to make walls...like this one

Yes, we humans forget often the old things and how we did it in the past. Thank you for the detailed explanation.

This is fascinating to me. I suppose since my grandfather was a brick and block mason, I'm used to seeing mortar used to hold bricks together. Certainly mud is easier to come by. How sturdy do you think this will be over time?

Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy seeing glimpses of other countries.

These stand strong for long run...even durin rainy days...the mud on the sides washed away, but the wall remain stronger...there is an old wall in my vicinity which is consttucted somwhere 25 years ago..and still no damage done....will show you the picture tomorrow @ethandsmith

Hi @steemflow after watching your post even Trump in now making a wall in his house he is so much motivated thanks for sharing it

@maujmasti

Interesting one @steemflow
But these walls are can not withstand the water weather and all for years. You still find it in the villages because everyone in our country doesn't have that much money.

@vinamra the wall is strong enough to face any weather. We have another boundary wall, standing since 20 years and very strong.....

Its great that it still stand and I wish it keeps on for 20 years more...... I just wanted to say it will not be as strong as cement and If you try to make one or two more floors on the same wall it may not withstand it.

@vinamra watch out for more....this post is only for a boundary wall...may be next i will make sure to capture mud house since 50 years or more...

Yeah sure, Go on.............

Nice... Showing us the old ways of construction and all: great content and nice pictures
