Twisted ankle

Yesterday was another long run day, and since I was missing the trails, I decided to get back out into the hills for a bit of off-road running.

It was a nice day for it, reasonably warm without being too hot. A little sunny, a little cloudy, just pleasant summer weather. As is normal when I head for the hills, the Tip Track was my gateway, so I headed up it at my usual slow pace. It felt a bit harder than usual however, probably due to the increase of mileage over the last week or so, and that fact is did a pretty quick 10km the previous evening.

But by the time I got to the top I was feeling much better, and carried on to The Windmill running freely.

Things were going well. I got to meet some very cute puppies on top of Wright’s Hill before heading down Salvation track to the Makara Mountainbike Park carpark. I really like running down this track. It’s a lovely place to run.

I was having fun right up until I came around a corner and got my footing wrong. I rolled my left ankle hard enough that I heard (and felt) the bones in my foot go ‘click’ and the tendons in my ankle scream in pain. It was so bad that I had to hop to a halt, unable to bear any weight on my left foot.

This was suddenly a game changer. There was no way I could continue running. So I tried walking, gingerly, realising that I had no money on me, so walking was the only way I was going to get home. And home was over 10kms away.

I hobbled a bit further down the track and then tried running, gently. No screams of agony burst from my chest, so I figured I’d keep going. I managed to run the rest of the way to the carpark, and refill my water bottles. My ankle was very unhappy, so I knew my original plan was out the window. Still, I did want to run up and down Makara Peak, which was why I’d come out this way.

So I started the climb up the road to the start of the track I’d be taking to get to the summit. My ankle didn’t feel too bad. It was grumbling, but then again so was my other ankle, and it had no real reason to.

I pushed on to the summit and then took the long easy downhill track back to the carpark. Things were a bit more painful by the time I got there however. So I decided to run home on the road instead of the trails.

I took my time and nursed the ankle along and eventually I made it home. I didn’t go as far as I had wanted, nor as fast as I had wanted. But at least I did run, and that’s the main thing.

Today my foot is a bit sore (but so is the rest of my body) but I’m hopeful there was not too much damage done and I can get back to running again tomorrow.

But seriously, I hope the ankle is none the worse for wear. All I need to recover from right now is sitting in a parade float in the bitterly cold just-south-of-Canada northern hemisphere. We haven't had enough snow for me to accumulate slipping-on-the-ice or snow-shoveling injuries yet.

The day has only 23 hours and not 24, do you know why? Because one hour is booked always for running.
