Steemit Ultra marathon – Test game, round one results

in #running7 years ago

Here are the results from round one of the test game.

Note: I got no response from @adityabhat bib no. 0001, and since @toofasteddie was keen to play, I've swapped out the player for bib no. 0001.

@toofasteddie you are now formally an official tester, so 5 SBD will be coming your way at the end of the test. Thanks for participating.

You get the 'runs' and duck behind a rock for a bit. Other runners can be heard gagging as they run past your rock.

Someone shouts at you 'You're doing well. it's all downhill from here'. Foolishly you beleive them and pick up the pace a bit.

Weird stuff happens on the trails
A rabbit hops over to the side of the trail and gives you a thumbs up, saying "Looking good Bro." This doesn't affect your running, but it does cause you to wonder about your mental state,

Your shoelace comes untied and trips you up. You fall flat on your face in the mud. It doesn't do any damage, but you feel like a right idiot.

You eat some food from an aid station. It might have been a bad move because you start to feel sick.

Comentary

@kiwiscanfly is off to a very fast start, but looking at his health he may have overcooked it a bit. Will he be able to keep that pace up for the whole race?

The rest of the pack have been a bit more cautious and so their health is better. But it is early days yet and anything can happen.

Testers

What are your thoughts on your strategy/ progress so far?

Keep an eye out for the round two post (either later on tonight or tomorrow morning) for you chance to catch up to @kiwiscanfly.

Are you new to Steemit and trying to figure out what it's all about?

yee ha...yeah that would be me, run the first 10k fast and walk the rest

hehehe that's pretty much how I run my races. It will be interesting to see how the different strategies work out.

With the wild cards - weird stuff happens on the trail - you might pick up some health points and be right back into it. So it is all still on for young and old :-)

Looks very intersting.

I'll be watching how the test goes on.

But as far I can see I'm willing to try it.

The day has only 23 hours and not 24, do you know why? Because one hour is booked always for running.

Amazing!!!! OMG, I have to take it seriously If I want reach the finish line! ;-)

Simple games with a little strategy are right up my street and despite me not even being able to run to the toilet! I have actually been having a sneaky peek at the course and researching marathon average speeds.
Due to my rather armchair competitive nature and us being 11hours apart, I've been watching for your results post to appear.
My only comment is that its directed towardds a niche market, keep the required skill levels high and the random setbacks low, runners are competitive creatures and any players in a full out of the game will not be happy with random unrealistic events.
I think its great fun...keep up the good work.
(If I were even more sycophantic than I've being in that post do you think you could fiddle the algortihms to help me win please ;-) )

thanks for that ;-)

A sneaky peek at the course is a good thing. The whole idea is that those who do their research are likely to do better at the game. It's that engagement and investment that I'm looking for.

At the moment it is aimed at runners, but if the game takes off, anyone can play. they can do their research and try to be as optimal as possible, or chance their luck and throw in randome values.

I played against my wife testing this out, and she beat me! Just by picking the right values at the right time. (she must have been listening when I was describing it after I ran the course)

The setbacks in this from the wild cards are all very minor. (they are more to give people a bit of a giggle) They have a really small effect overall, and it is balanced with a bunch of neutral outcomes and a bunch of positive outcomes, like picking up extra gels, having your fatigue levels drop, and running extra kilometers for free.

Some of these weird things have actually happened to me in races, which makes it fun for me when they turn up. ;-)

Fiddling with the algorithms may have to happen, so you never know ;-) Never give up until you cross the finish line! ;-)

The fact that some of these weird things are from your experience makes it 100x more cool :)

hehe yup. Weird things do actually happen on the trails around here.

I need to add another one after yesterday's run. - you come around a corner and find a man with a stop-go sign. You have to wait until the filming for a new ad stops so you can continue.

I ended up running around them hehe

Aye aye, tough competition :))))))
I like your approach and well rounded sentences. :)

Well, I looked at the course preview, first at runwellington page and I was trying to figure out a speed for the first climb, but also as the course continues...So and average. Then I researched some more and found this wonderful post with all the pictures:
http://runthehills.nz/wuu2k-60km-preview/
I was also wondering how to put more emphasis on the fact that we are simulating a real event here. Maybe include a picture at each stage? I'm not sure how other feel about it, you can argue that because I did my research I was able to find these gems :) It gave me a much better idea of the race and the terrain.
Unlike in real life you wrote that gels slow us down, I wasn't (and still isn't) sure if it's for the whole course or just the segment where I take it, so I decided not to take it, maybe not worth the extra 1 or maybe towards the end I will have better use for them ;)
I like the format and how we can look at everyones progress and also the weird stuff - makes it more fun.

I wish i had seen this review of the course before I ran it hehe.

This year I'm hoping to do a video series on the course to help other runners understand it and plan their races.

I consider the WUU2k to be my 'home' race and want to do my bit to make it as big a success as possible.

I ran part of this course yesterday - from Berhampore to the Makara Mountain Bike carpark and back (40kms).

The legs are certainly feeling it today.
