Steemit Ultra marathon – Test game, round one

This is the test game for the new running game on Steemit.

This is a simulated ultra marathon based on the Wellington Urban Ultra course - the infamous WUU2k.

We have five testers lined up to give it a crack

Each player will be racing each other to be the first to cover the 62km course. As this is a test game there is no money for winning, but each tester will get 5SBD for helping test the game.

Here are the rules and how it works

Each day I will put up a game post and the players will have 24 hours to reply in the comments.
Each player must supply

  • The speed they wish to run at. A value from 1 (very slow) to 15 (very fast) based on how fast they think someone could run the section of the course in front of them
  • The time in hours (from 0.25 to, 2) that they wish to run at that speed
  • The number of gels to consume (optional, from 0 to however many you have)

Once I have all of the details (or the time limit is up) I will run the calculations and edit the post to show where the players are on the course.

Anyone not supplying their details in the time frame will be removed from the game (classed as DNF- did not finish).

Some helpful notes for the testers

This game is all about managing how much fatigue and damage you take, while maximising how much distance you can cover each day.
The distance is calculated by figuring out how far you could theoretically run using the values you supplied.

e.g.
A speed of 10 and 1 hour would give a theoretical distance of 10 x 1 = 10km

I then get the average ‘runnable’ value for the next 10kms (based from where you are currently on the course) and use that to determine how far you can actually run at that speed and how much damage and fatigue you would suffer.

The more your speed value is overthe runnable value the more damage and fatigue you take on. This is cumulative, so if you are not careful, you could get so damaged that you can’t run any further!

Each gel gives you 1 extra kilometre. But it also adds a cumulative value to the health score, slowing you down the more you take.

In the results there will be a health icon ranging from green (healthy and fit) to red (having a really bad day). This indicates how much damage and fatigue you have taken. It is possible to go from the red end towards the green end, but not likely. So be careful with your choices.

The better your understanding of the course the more you are likely to get your values right and pass your competitors.

Please note:
These values are all pre-determined. There is currently no way for me to manually manipulate the outcome. So there is no possibility for favouritism.

I have put a lot of thought and effort into designing this game. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect (yet). I am looking for feedback on how easy this is to play, how much fun it is, what can be improved etc. So please feel free to express yourself in the comments and let me know what would make it better and more engaging.

The rules are pretty simple - the players give me three values - speed, time and gels.

They determine these by examining the course and trying to work out the best combination for covering the terrain in front of them.

I then put those numbers into a game engine which calculates how far they will run. the first one to complete 62kms is the winner.

you will consume (3) gels

This is just a test game for the five registered testers to play and check that I have done everything right in the game engine and to tease out any bugs before I let others play. That's why they get paid for doing this for me.

I m happy to include you in the game if you like, but you won't be eligible for the 5SBD.

me too. I can see from the values supplied already that everyone has a different strategy, and that will test things nicely.

I think I must point out that I played this against my wife the other day, and she beat me ;-)

Quick question: until what digit can you set the speed and the time. (gel is obvious it has to be either 0,1,2,3 at this point, but can I run with 5,32 or you prefer the number to be a whole. Same with the time. (it's not obvious for me, maybe that's 0,25 increments or can be anything)
(I guess the average it's not going to be an exact number ;)
It's totally fine if it's easier for you to work with wholes, I just would like to know and I think it's nice to specify. :)

The speed can be anything from 1-15. So 5.32 is fine.

The same with the time value - anything from 0.25 (1/4/ of an hour) to 2 hours is fine.

Thanks for clarifying (that was also a feedback that when you do the first post you can clarify this if it has to be a whole number or not...maybe it's not mandatory and not that big of a deal, but it made me think, so that's why I asked).
