London Marathon Done! What Next?

I Need a New Challenge!

So for the last 4 months I have followed a training plan to get me through my first marathon. I was running 4 or 5 times a week. Now I'm feeling a bit down and lost as if there is something missing in my life. I took my training seriously, found it tiring, boring at times and even said I couldn't wait to start running for fun again! But now its over I feel I need another challenge!

I am running The Great North Run in September but thats a long way off so I don't need to seriously start training for that quite yet. I have a few local smallish races throughout the summer including three 5k races, two more 5 mile races (I did one this week) and a 10k race.

I'm thinking maybe to start working on my speed. I don't like running fast and definitely don't like interval training but if I don't ever do it I will never get faster. I would like to improve on my 5k pb, I really would love to get sub 25 minutes. I haven't been anywhere near that since May last year when I got 25.05.

So what does everyone think I should do? How should I train for The Great North Run? My half marathon record is 2 hours 7 obviously I'd like to beat that too.

Thanks for looking
Happy reading peeps🖤

Congratulations! If you don't like interval training then you aren't starting out the right way. That sounds harsh, but what I mean is that you should start doing whatever distance interval seems like a nice break from your regular runs. It doesn't matter if you start with 50m intervals at slightly faster than your 5k pace. But once you get into a routine you will progress quickly. I'd be happy to give you more specifics. thank you I will check out your channel x

Fully agree with you. @shazza, if you still don’t like interval training is because maybe you were doing it wrongly.
Maybe you should try fartlek first.
Anyway, follow @cstrimel 5k running plan and you will improve for sure!

I will have a look at it, thank you x

How about mixing it up a little with things like the Dune Runner Nelson Knee Knobbler events? We had one in Caister in March but there's still Winterton and Sea Palling to go. Shorter distances but slightly more challenging underfoot?

I have seen these but I have only really done road running not sure how I would get on with the terrain. x

Plenty of places to practice in the area :D I imagine very different from road running - I've oy tried sand casually. Looked a well organised event though and aimed at all abilities. Sand or not I'd imagine a 5 or 10k after an amazing marathon would be doable.

....if not you could always go for a paddle :D

Yey, we have a new Running Author of the Week!!!
