Three Switches and One LightbulbsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #riddle7 years ago

Here is a riddle which I discovered a while ago and fried my mind! Try your luck at it!

There is three switches in your corridor.

You know that one of these switch control the lightbulb which is in the attic of your room.

You are alone and have no physical way to be in the corridor and the attic at the same time... So, how do you determine WHICH SWITCH control the bulb?

Of course, you can play with the switches as much as you want BUT YOU CAN GO TO THE ATTIC ONLY ONCE!

PS: I didn't invent that riddle and will publish the source as soon as someone finds the solution. Please, don't google the solution, or if you do, don't put up the answer! And df you already know it, please don't tell it, there is nothing else to gain than a good brainstorm!

GOOD LUCK!
Sort:

Can you like put a lot of mirrors under the attic door, in the ceiling and on the walls down the stairs to the switches' locations? So that when you played with the three switches, the mirror will reflect the light from the light bulb without you entering the attic.

Or probably just ask your mom which switch is which.

haha i like the idea of the mirror... But there is a solution which will "enlighten" you and does not require any extra prop.

This is an oldie but a goodie!

'You don't need eyes to see you need vison!'

Exact! You need all five senses ;) Which sense would be the most relevant here to solve that riddle?

Ouch my brain hurts. I'll keep thinking.

You could of course just turn all three on?.... this is not the answer though, is it?

You can do that. But that does not tell you WHICH one of the three is the one which works.

I love it haha! 3 switcehs of being very creative! :) If you get the chance you should upvote my latest post about how to invest long term! Thanks! :) https://steemit.com/steem/@parkermorris/steemit-daily-vlog-004-invest-long-term

thanks for sharing

There is not enough information given to solve this without making some assumptions.

The simplest assumption to make would be if I can see the lights that are not in the attic go on and off. If that is so, I simply eliminate those two switches, turn them off, and turn the third on before going to the attic.

With the switches set as you've shown, if I go to the attic and the light is off, I know the middle switch controls it. However, if it is on, I know only that either the left or right switch control it.

There seems to be a missing piece of information.
😄😇😄

@creatr

There is ENOUGH information! But, like me at the first try, you just consider the question from one aspect, you do not "see" everything. There is a very easy trick. Maybe after a good night sleep, it will become obvious.

Thank you for the encouragement, I will revisit this! ;) :D

Ok, @krizia @teaandkisses @parkermorris @riostarr @creatr , have you had time to think a bit about the riddle? or should I explain the solution already?
