Revolutions in Reverse

"In Post-Capitalism we have to promote that which is common." -Paul Mason

I finished reading Revolutions in Reverse by David Graeber and I have to say, I agree with most of what he says. That first comes the organizing and then the actual revolution; not the other way around. Petite revolutions have already been established: creating councils, coops, federations, small insurrections, movements all around. I agree on the idea of decentralized acts of revolt triumphing over the highly centralized "one punch....sieze the state notion." Plus the latter is too dam bloody.

I agreed with most; not all. I don't believe he implemented all those organizing models into technology...into....disruptive technologies more specific the blockchain generation.**

I believe these new technologies will eliminate the middlemen in our society.....banks, politicians, and have the people themselves from the ground up refashion reality.

People are fearful about automation, about jobs being displaced. I say it's inevitable. But many assume technology will only hit the "low-level" jobs the hardest. I argue technologies will hit the whole notion of jobs. Meaning doctors, lawyers, politicians, management. I want automation to hit especially the politicians. The idea is discussed profoundly here:

Blockchain being used for voting, well how about the whole notion of government? The only reason we have politicians is because they represent certain values that we agree and we trust they can implement them, that's why we voted them in office. The problem with this is trust. We've seen far too many politician taking a back end deal by some country, company, billionare. Killary Clinton is infamous for racking billions of dollars to appease her corporate donors. But what about US, the People?

This is why I want to automate administration. Because the trust of the People have been broken. And for good reason we have always used dumb system of governance. Public or private bureaucrats will always refashion the system to their liking. The socialist or the capitalist will never imagine the best and fastest way to implement ideas. (Bear with me, I know that idea sounds off but I was listening to Paul Mason's breakdown of his book Post-Capitalism which you can see here. He was having a conversation with Larry Page and they asked Mr Page what would he would want to create and he responded a machine to know everything...probably talking about Google. But what caught my attention was in the end Mason's response was that Mr. Page will never get a machine to know everything. You can ask it any question you want. But I can never ask question I want. And therefore you don't know what my questions are. I can only ask it the dumb questions via the interface. Whereas if it was open source we can all ask it questions.)

Same concept can be applied to governance. The left wing or right wing knows what they want, but will never know what WE want. If it was open source we can achieve the progression of our society at a much quicker rate. On top of the blockchain and it's cryptographic element we can also achieve the trust that so many politicians took for granted. What we need and are achieving are smart systems... smart contracts where money cannot corrupt the system. Of course there are issues with hacking and so forth but I'm pretty sure technology will find its way to blockade any corruption. And maybe who knows, Hackers too can have their voices heard in this open source ecosystem.

We don't need the conventional sense of revolution. The internet and technologies are in themselves revolutionary. Just look at what is happening in this ecosystem....Steemit. https://steemit.com/bounties/@ned/it-s-time-for-a-steem-bounty-system#@wwworld4us/re-ned-it-s-time-for-a-steem-bounty-system-20160905t020936496z

The community is coming together for common purposes to make this ecosystem better. I called it the Blockchain commune of the 21th century. (Much like the Paris Commune, only less bloody) Why not apply blockchain...open source in a practical sense in our everyday lives to improve economy, politics, and society. I agree with Graeber, revolutions have indeed come in reverse and for good reason, it's much more effective this way.

Sort:

I agree with much of this essay, particularly that a planned 'revolution' which takes into consideration as much of the complexities of society as possible, pre-revolution, the better. What's your vision for the future? You are obviously thinking about the subject, I do too. What would a just, equitable and thriving society look like? How do we maintain freedom and ensure good behavior from others? ( When I say good behavior I don't mean some faux religious morality concept but more, how do we minimize victimization of other community members and our shared biosphere by the few people who just don't give a crap about the trail of tears, blood or trash they leave in their wakes.)
Thanks for this inquiry...... oc
