TV SERIES REVIEW: "Why Women Kill" (2019–)
Many people still insist that women are the weaker sex and are based on the central idea that they always have to be defended because they can't do it themselves... Is this true? Well, if you're - unfortunately - one of the people, maybe this series has the right reasons to change your mind about this backward and totally disposable thinking.
Created by Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives), from a perspective that provides audiences with different angles and perspectives under the same kinds of dilemmas experienced by women, Why Women Kill is an engaging, intriguing drama with excellent acidic hints of comedy that builds itself about 3 main characters: Beth Ann (a quiet 60's housewife), Simone (a convinced 80's socialite) and Taylor (an activist lawyer from the 2000's).
The cast is led by Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (and is supported by a supporting cast that also deserves recognition). Each one of them (especially Liu, who deserves a particular highlight for delivering amazing work!) Impersonates his characters in an extremely convincing way (a well-executed artistic composition exercise) and, each in his own way, add interesting and showcasing particulars to the viewer which makes them unique.
Thus, even though they all share the same "parallel" universe (and all the joys and sorrows to come of their respective eras), each character is easily identifiable by having very striking characteristics and also by being able to connect behind their subtle lies. scattered and the fight against their internal monsters throughout the plot that strangely connect them in an unexpected way through the sublayers imposed by the script (which by the way is very well crafted and worked by the directors).
The breaks of expectation are constant (which often causes big surprises, despite minor slips between episodes) and this aspect is critical for episodes to maintain the momentum, pace and importance needed to continue to hold and renew the audience attention... Which is quickly being entangled by a plot full of ups and downs, hilarious moments and events that arouse the most diverse kinds of feelings (depending on how each viewer will see or relate to each character).
Visually, the series has above average production by TV standards. It is easy to see how hard the entire team strove to deliver a quality product that strives to be attractive. Particularly speaking, I highlight the photography work (responsible for creating an efficient junction between the dramatic and comical tones that always seek to blend in) and the art direction (which is minimalist in even the most symbolic little of the scenes, making everything more importantly... and not merely illustrative accessories).
Technically, it is also very valid to point out that the soundtrack is also very good and seems to have been chosen very carefully because they embrace every event in which they are present in an undeniably correct way. Taking deep roots with each new episode, this is an extremely rich technical element that becomes almost an additional and unique character, such is its importance in the project.
In addition to a wisely architected editing of scenes (with almost millimeter accuracy to delineate each nucleus as clearly as possible about the facts presented) and costumes that emphasize the importance of each character in their respective times, always respecting the events in the timeline of each episode (which clearly treat the three narrative lines so different and yet so equal).
Involving themes such as infidelity, murder, blackmail, prejudice, polyamory, sexuality and so many other highly relevant themes, Why Women Kill can merge - at an almost frenetic pace - all of these elements in a very solid way wandering through 3 completely different eras, under the same scenario (the house shared by the three main characters) and can still include many modernist elements to connect with the audience in a more genuine way.
