(SPOILER! Review) Let's talk about the finale of Game of Thrones Season 7

in #review7 years ago (edited)

A lot has changed in HBO's series Game of Thrones. I mean they stopped trying to adapt everything out of the book and go at it their way after season 5, but just for the record; George R.R Martin is still alive and writing his last book to finish the Fire and Ice series. Am not quite sure if am sated by the screenwriter's decision to completely have leeway over how the show will finish but that's just one problem below the tip of the iceberg, there have been multiple plot developments including new ones starting from the end, basically it was a cliffhanger ending but a good one nonetheless. I still have my gripes though, so let's talk about it.

For those who accidentally stumbled into this article or have just decided to read for heck without seeing the show. Do please watch it, you're missing out on some really good stuff. Spoiler talk starts in:

A)How the mighty falls and comebacks to turn the tides:

I did not like how episode 6 prevailed the Night King when he threw that spear into one of Daenerys's dragon, Viserion. Just like that within 10-15 seconds of timeframe when anything could have happened like Dany's shouting at Vis to dodge instead of spectating the oh-so-terrible plot twist, it felt very obvious and kind of cliche if you think about. However, aside that being the case, it set motion to Viserion being a wick and being under Night King's command. We all know what happened in the finale's climax, yes that's right the great wall finally got torn  asunder, all thanks to zombie Viserion and.....his blue fire ? now am not mad that the night king finally draws close to Winterfell, it's just how the plot came into, how the story went, it just could have been better.

B) No more fealty to his crazy sister/lover/queen

Say what you will about Jaime, I've grown somewhat fond of him. Yeah sure, we've seen what he can do after he pushed Bran Stark out of the tower window turning him into a cripple. He had an incestuous relationship with his sister, again ewww territory. Let's not also forget he is called Oathbreaker, title he earned cause of his assassination of the Mad King during the rebellion after he sworn oath to protect his king at the time. But this time, he finally got his senses kicked in and gave Cersei the finger after she somewhat with perfunctory threatened to execute him if he "in her own words" goes against her back again. Yes, she is paranoid and a bit psychotic at this point especially after talking to Tyrion with whom she swore she would get her revenge upon even though she had the chance to execute him while he was willing to accept his fate after tear jerking...she hesitated. Well what gives then? what's going on with her after she changed her mind? Well to Jaime's surprise and disappointment, she had already planned with Euron Greyjoy to bring mercenaries hired by the money she loaned from the Iron Bank to protect themselves all the while breaking the deal she made with....well everyone else who stood to protect the human race from the white walker threat...but I know that's sounds like a shitty plan honestly, she's just being very persistent at this moment. Jaime was having a hard time following his sister/lover after her plan to kill the Tyrell and the High Sparrow from season 6, caused their son to commit suicide due to acknowledging his failure to run the kingdom (and causing the viral meme thread we all know). This time when the mountain unsheathed his sword from Cersei's command, even though it wasn't fully executed, Jaime's heart broke and he finally stopped caring. Few seconds later, he starts heading towards the wall to meet up with whoever's fighting the foreseeable fight. Now I like how this has turned out, we've always known Cersei was pushing it and this time she finally pushed too far enough. She is easily one of the most hated characters of this show but progressively thorough the show even though she somehow lost everything, she even forgot who she was despite being the queen and a Lannister.

C) Jon and Daenerys sleeping in a bed, F-U-C----------

This one's a little complicated, what's even worse is that within the intense lovemaking, Bran starts telling Sam the truth about who Jon actually is and that he acknowledges that Jon is not a bastard, nor is he a snow. Actually it gets more sticky; he is the direct heir to the iron throne based. Narrating this while both of our..ehem future king and queen getting icky. Also, you guys do remember he is Rhaegar's son? Daenerys's older brother? ewwwww. But hey, it's not like a big surprise considering Targaryans practice in incest usually to maintain their pure genes and silver/white hair. This one on the other hand, it doesn't go towards a much happier path once Season 8 starts, it gets really, I mean really, really complex and hard to work with. It could also change Jon's mind about Daenerys or worse, change who he has believed to be this whole time. He could even deny his lineage, cause there's a prided and righteousness side of him that sticks out like a sore thumb thanks to being raised by Ned.

Also sidenote, no am not going to mention anything about what happened with Tyrion outside of her dorm. Why he made that face, who knows. Maybe he made a deal with Cersei, maybe he doesn't like where this is going or maybe it's because he finally realized who Jon actually is.

D) Trickster gets caught in his own game

"How do you answer to these charges" Sansa turns her head "Lord Baelish?" and that my ladies and gentleman is how revenge finally comes in tour de force when Sansa, Bran and Arya charges Petyr Baelish for all the crimes against their family. In swift justice, Arya arrives with a spotted gleeful face and slashes Littlefinger's neck after he begged and pleaded revealing his love towards Sansa and their mother and that all was for her interest even though it didn't quite seem like that was the case when Sansa took a good reality check of what he did to her amidst all the smooth talking and scheming. The moment it was done, at the back of my head I thought "great, now this one good actor has to acknowledge that his role in this show is over, not even a little screentime for Season 8". Aidan Gillen who plays Baelish is a phenomenal actor, his performance was laudable. The master of coin it seems is another major character after Olenna Tyrell in the death list.

E)So what's the verdict:
Well I've had more expectations after seeing where season 6 went, but man talk about budget cuts. No wonder they finally decided to end it in 7 episodes with the finale having all the budget it needed. Also the leaks were publicity stunts, I mean come on, they probably knew what was going on. Now let's not stray away with our high appraisals for this show, it was kind of weak, even major plot points should have gotten better treatments than the one they currently did. Season 7 to me, it had everything to get us hooked, but felt like a meager warm-up. But I hope the book is done, they really do need substantial material to end the show with. Cause looking at the track record of these screenwriters, I would say they do not have even an ink of R.R Martin's touch in this. Season 8 will be the sweet goodbye party we all need and deserve hopefully once it comes to be so.

Gerat post. I fully upvoted you.

Why thank you, you have my gratitude :)

Littlefinger s death was a complicated moment for me, it felt great to see him reap what he's sown but I will miss him terribly.

I felt the end of the seasons had 3 big moments and they botched all of them, although two of them were loaded and were bound to be awkward. The most unforgivable was the death of Viserion which you mentioned, eh spent so much time on Jon Snow and gay jokes that they practically offscreened a dragon. But then the other two....

Bran triumphantly narrating Jon Snows true identity over them having sex, the tone and the music was so cheesy and we are somehow supposed to forget that they are related....

...and the night king on that dragon.....I don't know if I'm the only one who feels his way but he seemed so much like the wicked witch from the wizard of oz. he looks like a meme or something. The guy seriously needs some facial expressions, like one or two, it's just so awkward to always see that smugness on such an evil character.

I wrote a post earlier this week justifying my addiction to GoT, because I'm in way deeper than I ever planned...feel free to check it out.
